Spoke to a few ordinary punters in my county town today who keep thinking the marathon is live...I had to correct them as they just remember when it used to be live......They would love to see it on TV...The marathon if it were live would command much bigger viewing figures than RTE might think....Its a shame our national broadcaster has no enthusiasm for athletic events......Its an Irish thing as other countries usually broadcast their showpiece events.........Athletics is just conveniently relegated

If they were to put it on live though then they would have to re-schedule the transmission of Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

Its a disgrace its not live on tv. Its bad enough it starts too early on a bank holiday and most people are sleeping off hangovers! Last time I ran the DCM it was noticable how few people bother to come out. If it was on a bit later it would help but no chance anymore.

Definitely think the race is more runner-friendly than spectator friendly. I used always go down and watch it when it came through Raheny but since it moved fromthe Northside suburbs to a more urban route (a shame in itself) I've been put off going in to watch. That said, I'll be in the Phoenix Park Monday morning. Best of luck to all the boardsies lining up!

Personally, given the oft-quoted limited RTE budget for televised athletics in Ireland, I'm not too fussed about the marathon not being broadcast live. I know plenty of friends running but the chances of them being shown, even the sub 2:40 runners, is slim at best...maybe a quick sconce at the start line.

I'd much prefer RTE to focus their energies on ensuring that the European XC is broadcast seamlessly in December. That event will have far more pan-European appeal than the Dublin Marathon and a broader spread of elite athelets, including Irish elite athletes.

If it boils down to a choice between watchin Andriy Sokolov run a 2'10" marathon or watching Martin Fagan and Mary Cullen winning European XC medals in Santry, I'd choose the latter.

As for TV3, TG4 or some other station, I'm guessing the cost/benefit analysis doesn't make this the most lucrative of events to show live.

But they get to actually make more money out of the European XC. Because they have to provide the race coverage for all the other EU TV networks, and probably charge each of them whatever it will cost them to send a couple of camera men out to Santry for the day.

BBC will probably have more cameras there just to cover Cram doing the commentary than RTE will have on the race though.

Its a shame we dont highlight via live broadcast the way the BBC does the health and fitness benefits to a nation of healthy active mass participation in sports like the marathon. Watching sokolov run sub 2.10 wouldnt compare of course to watching fagan or cullen medal but would still be special to athletics afficionados....Im competing myself so couldnt look at it anyway...Just my tuppence worth.......It seems to me that costs are so high in Ireland anyway that a cost benefit analysis of anything is mostly a redundant exercise....Good luck to everybody running on monday.....

Although we'll know the results before we watch the highlights anyway, I'm hoping that Setanta have learned how to do a highlights show commentary now. Rather than last year where they showed a clip of them all lined up at the start line and the voice over tells you who comes first second and third in the first minutes of the program.

How much is The Star? €1? €1.50? For that you get the full results, and you get free sheets of newsprint for wrapping up your food leftovers for the brown bin. And if, like me, you're doing a lot of painting around the house, well you have paper to rest your painting materials on. What's not to like?

Also handy, if you recently got a new puppy in the household. Unfortunately I have only got a goldfish,so I'll watch it on Setanta, and search the results online.

In the ten years or so that the Dublin Marathon has been on independent television, what you describe has simply never happened.

However, this was done on the Cork Marathon this summer, which was put together by a different company, and with an entirely different crew.

I have the last three years Dublin Marathons recorded onto tape. I have just watched all of them and what you mention above didn't happen at all.
I can't understand some people in the forum just making things up like this.

The cork marathon Marathon was covered by a different company and yes this did happen. At the end of the Setanta marathon it has three logos. IFTS Irish film & television services, How's that ? ltd. and Setanta Screens. I can't recall who filmed Cork but i do know that it wasn't any of these three.

Just watched the hour long version of the Dublin Marathon tonight on Setanta. It was the best coverage of a marathon I have seen in a long time. It didn't just focus on the main race but the 3-5 hour runners also. They even sent a reporter out runniing along side the athletes. Great show.

Just watched the show tonight. This was not the case. They showed lots of people down the field. Even Interviewed them.

I love the way new users like to get tsuck in from the start, accusing him of making it up, get a grip, he is one of our more frequent and helpful posters and yep I'm sure he did get it mixed up with Cork as I did on another thread.

I do agree with you on the coverage this year, very impressive, well done setanta.

Just out of curiousity what marathon coverages are you comparing it to? I watched it and quite enjoyed it but I don't think you can compare a highlights package that airs 4 days after a race to the likes of London, New York, Great North Run, any of the Worlds or Olympic events - I'm using them as examples as they're the ones I watch. Taking nothing away from Setanta, it's great that there was some coverage of it - but saying it's one of the best coverages in a long time is a bit extreme!

Does anyone fancy uploading the marathon program??

I got interviewed at mile 22 by somebody from RTE (must have been the pink balloon) but they only had a few minutes section on RTE news that night and did not make the cut.

Not sure if it is Setanta that produces this program. I think it is an independent production company as per the logos at the end of the program. As for the upload, don't think that this would be allowed. Oh and sorry for the accusation, following some thought maybe he did mix it up with the Cork program.
