My Mum just asked me whether Stephen Gately could have fulfilled his wish and adopted a child?. I don't think he could have in this country, could he? Or could he or others adopt a child abroad and be recognised here?.

No, not as a couple. Only married couples are allowed to jointly adopt a child in Ireland - which automatically rules out homosexuals as they haven't yet been granted the right to marriage.

He could, however, have applied to adopt as a single parent. In theory he would be treated as any other single person wishing to adopt. Although if he were successful, his partner would have no legal connection to the child (i.e. following Steven's death, his husband would not be seen as the 'other parent' and would have no rights to continue raising the child).
