Iphone on PAYG

    Hi,

I currently have a 3G and I'm eligible for an upgrade now so I was going to get a 3GS and give my 3G to my wife. The problem is she's on PAYG and I'm wondering how the data usage works on it.

Anyone with an iPhone on PAYG? How do you find the data usage? Expensive?

    Thanks

    It's pretty annoying...
You pretty much can't use more than 50mb a day or else you'll find your credit running down very dast and my iPhone (Even though Push Notifications are off) just randomly connects to the internet and uses 68kb every day which takes a euro out of my credit each day :(

I noticed my credit dropping quickly too.
My solution is to reset the network settings and then only put the
username and password back in when I need to connect and check something.
Not ideal but waaaaaay cheaper! :)

    Hi Nedd,

I bought the 8GB 3G a few weeks back (PAYG).
Before I knew what the hell was going on,all my credit was gone.
To stop it automatically connecting using EDGE the best thing to do is to go to Settings>General>Network>Cellular Data Network and in the APN section for Cellular Data, enter any gibberish(Qwerty ,anything..).
This will at least stop it from trying to connect (as this new network doesn't exist).
Then you are fine to use it on your home WIFI,hotspots etc.

    Hi All,

Thanks for the info. My 3G is jailbroken so I can disable EDGE and 3G using SBSettings, this should stop it connecting randomly.

I mentioned to my wife last night that it could get expensive using the iphone on PAYG and she lost interest in it. She was just hoping to get a shiny new phone and doesnt really care about all the wonderful things the iphone can do.

    Thanks again.

That is incorrect. You can toggle 3G on and off with it but you cant disable edge (even though there is a toggle for it).

    Trust me I know ;).

Yep you can. You just go into the settings and change how it turns off edge. There are two ways it does this, newer faster way but might not work and the older slower way which does work. Trust me i know and it has worked :)

Easiest way if you don't have SBSettings is to go into network settings and delete one letter from the apn in cellular data. This stops the phone from connecting to O2 and if O2 don't see you connecting then they can't charge you. Plus all you need to do is re-add that one letter to get back on. No need to worry about user names and passwords.

I don't really know what you mean.

I think they removed the option from SBSettings. It was in bossprefs. I haven't turned off EDGE in about 8 months. Ever since Meteor changed the way they charged.

Turning off edge in SBSettings worked for me though.

    Read this for more info.
