Usb To Guitar lead, any thoughts?

Hey I use audacity to record onto my pc. I have a whole crazy set up and finally got a laptop powerful enough to withstand proper recording. Well, my main issue is that I'm sick of using a guitar lead fitted with a big-jack-to-little-jack converter that goes into the mic slot on the laptop, it's got way too much hiss.

I'm wondering if anyone uses a usb lead or knows where to buy a cheap one or just any thoughts on a way to record onto a laptop in general.
    :pac: Gratias Vobis Ago :P

So what a lead with a jack on one end and a USB plug on the other? Er... :o

You'll be wanting an audio interface.

Get an Amplug and a cheap Behringer Interface maybe.

Yeah, is there anything cheap in Ireland, perhaps town that anyone has or can recommend?

This is probably your best bet, but you may find one input a bit limiting down the line.

This is probably your best bet, but you might find one input a bit limiting down the line. Of course this also requires and microphone, you'll to pay more for an unit with a high impedance instrument input

Great, thanks a lot for the suggestions. Keep 'Em coming I'd love any other idea's as I'll have to wait 3 weeks before I buy one. :DGratias Tibi Ago:D

Just curious, has anyone ever used a cable with a usb connection at the end. If I were to connect the guitar jack end to the headphone port in my amp (which is levelled out nicely by my 8-track) and the other end into my pc, would it be better than what I do now (into the mic port lol). The only problem is the hiss and kinda weak quality which means a lot of iffy mastering on audacity...

Mic up your amp, lead your mic throw a mixer into your laptop.
I imagine this will get you the most natural sound?
Probably cost quite a lot though.

Get an M-audio Fasttrack interface, very basic but works a wonder with almost everything. I use it with M-Powered Protools and Guitar Rig3 no bother.

They go for around €100 mark, you should be able to sus out a secondhand one on adverts.ie or wherever for about half that.

    i second this

does the fast track use usb1?

ive an mbox and shocked that it still uses usb1!

It Exists!!! And, what's even weirder, there are usb guitars... And I've found that people mod their guitar so it can connect to a pc. Weird stuff, only found out all this today. Certainly a day of revelations lol.

Yeah the fast track interface looks good, idk from the display pics I haven't seena wire to go from the box to the laptop via usb but I assume there is one lol

What worries me however is that I don't like to use windows when recording. I use ubuntu linux and I was warned about drivers not working. Now I've heard this about a LOT of stuff when I say I'm using linux, always about drivers etc... yet I've never had a problem. Even today I had a problem connecting a new usb modem TO WINDOWS (always driver problems) but on linux it worked without so much as a murmur...

idk if anyone uses linux equipped with hydrogen and audacity (and maybe rosegarden) to record, it's probably all pro-tools with you serious people :P
