I am based in the states. I have my equivalent of a drivers permit and been on plenty of lessons. The problem i have is lack of practice time between the lessons. How do people get past that. The reason for the lack of practice is we have a baby and i commute a fair distance to work so any time to drive is stuck for the weekend.

How come you can't drive to work? I know they're very strict over there on needing a fully licenced driver with you, but it might be possible to carpool with someone in work, or even someone working nearby. I can't imagine anyone not being glad of a lift in exchange for supervising.
