Car Tax Query

First off, thanks to everyone who replied to my previous posts. Went with an 08 Lancer, dull, dependable, but I do think they're sexy. Big step up from the 03 Clio I was used to!

I know this comes up before but the search results aren't the most specific at the moment. I've transfered insurance (800 with 123.ie, 25 yrs old, 3 years NCB if you must know-other companies were quoating me that for the clio) so I'm waiting on a disc.

I'm sending off the completed reg cert to Shannon today. Any idea how long it takes to get one back?

The car was on the forecourt since March so hasn't been taxed-when I get the Reg Cert in my name do I only become liable for car tax on the date it was sold or do I still have to complete a RF100A saying it was off the road between March and Oct when I'm going to tax it?

Finally when I get the reg cert back do I just go to the tax office with it (and a RF100A if required)?

Hope to get it sorted asap because driving around untaxed (bereft of either disc) doesn't suit my personality (hence the dull Lancer!)

Cheers and sorry for the lenght of the post.

    Sponme

when you get the cert back, you bring that and your insurance details into the tax office and pay the tax from the date you became the registered owner.

there was a massive delay in Shannon, dunno what its like these days

    Cheers,

Good to know I can skip the Garda/signing step.

Hope the delays gone down, read in some post here that they process them within 3 days of receipt but not sure what exactly that applies to.

Have a copy of the Reg Cert with the change of owner filled in in the glove box and my insurance details. Also I know I shouldn't but do people reckon I can get away without discs up for a week or 2?

Hey guys - im in a similar situation: bought a car in July and the new reg cert came out to me eventually in October (there was a mispelling in my name and had to send it back..). I posted all the paperwork (form RF100A, reg cert etc) and fee to my local tax office on the 12th of october (as I didnt want to take a half day off work just to do this) and still havent received anything and my card hasnt been debited. I emailed them yesterday (the 22.10.2009) and they informed me they are currently processing forms received on the 7th of October!

On Saturday (17.10.2009) I received a fine from a ticket warden for non display of tax disc (I didnt realise they could fine for this but they can!) !!!!

Does anyone know if I can appeal this fine as I have sent the application in and its taking them this long to process it? I will pay it anyway but just wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

Don't think you can skip the signing process. I bought a jeep 2 months ago and it wasn't taxed since May. When I went to the tax office with the form I was told to get it signed or else I would have to pay for all the tax since May. You need to fill out the peroid it was off the road so you only have to pay from the date you bought it/registered as owner.

Weird, after Shay's post above I had a look at that RF100A form (yes, I know I should've done it before I posted in the first place!) and it says:

5.2 If the ownership of the vehicle has changed since it was last taxed, you are NOT liable for the arrears period from the expiry of the last tax
disc to the end of the month immediately preceding the date of sale.

So I took it you fill old the 'past owner period' dates on the form and are able to skip the Garda signing step and I pay the tax from the start of October.

Stories like yours Carstuck are what confuse me!

I would say no, you got a fine for not displaying a current valid motor tax disc which is correct. Even if the car was taxed and you forgot to display the disc in the windscren you would still have been fined as non displaying of a current tax disc is a different offence to not having your car taxed.

I don't think it cost's anything to appeal the fine, as long as you don't let it drag on more than 28 days (then cost of fine goes up). Might as well give it a go, what have you got to lose?

That's correct. You can only tax a car form the beginning of a month so if you bought the car on say October 15th, you've to pay the tax from October 1st ONLY!

Just an update, posted the VRC to Shannon on the 21st,they got it the 22nd and I got the Cert in my name in the post this morning. Taxed car this morning from the beginnging of this month, no hassle with arrers.

BUT only realised later that they charged me the CO2 rate not the engine size rate (50 quid less than the previous owner paid last year).

The car was first registered in Feb 08 so should be on the old system shouldn't it? Planning on keeping quiet since I imagine the motor tax office was just following the computer. This happen anyone else? And can I look forward to a similar small but not unpleasant windfall when I go back to tax it next October!

I think owners of Jan 01 - June 30 2008 registered cars had the choice of engine based or Co2 which ever worked out the cheapest.

Cars registered between 1st January 2008 and 30th June 2008 can go on to either engine size or CO2 emission tax rates - depending on which is better. Should continue on the CO2 tax from now on.
