    What kind of car?
    What kind of 'full' service?

Its a 04 passat TDi, Ive booked in for a full service which is the oil and filter, air filter, plugs and checking over the rest of the car??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,817 ✭✭✭Stevie Dakota

Your TDI has no plugs, I wouldn't be getting excited over €210 for oil and air filter. Windsor have a €139 offer at the moment, on any make.

That does not sound like a full service, which is why I asked - its an oil service. Check your owners manual if you don't believe me!

A full service (depending on the car) should include coolant & brake fluid change, pollen filter renewal, fuel filter change, etc.

Sorry it is glow plugs being renewed as its been giving me trouble starting sometimes, Im pretty sure thats a good price in getting these done??
    Please advise?

Interesting that they are changing the plugs on a diesel car. €40 for the bits and the rest for a walk around.

I apologise, I have mis-informed you guys, its a fuel filter, oil and filter and the glow plugs along with checking all brakes, timing belt, other belts and a check over the other bits and pieces?? Just phoned the guy, very pleasant I must say!! Am I getting good value??

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators Posts: 42,146 Mod ✭✭✭✭Seth Brundle

Thats still pretty much an oil service (which is the basic service).
I described some of the items required in a 'full' service already!
Checking brakes is not the same as replacing the brake fluid (which should be done every two years!), no matter how nice they are on the phone!

A set of heater plugs is about €60 and can be messy enough to fit so, on mature reflection, it's probably not that bad.

IIRC they are about a tenner from GSF.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9 Lanky-bastad

Well this is true, point taken, but Im sure if they check it and it needs replacing that they would at least inform me or just do it wouldnt they??
Im pretty sure a pollen filter isnt changed every year is it?

Forgive my lack of knowledge but I havent a clue what IIRC or GSF are??

I've been to these before & the Service was excellent, both on my car & to me (the customer). Customer Service IMO in this Country is down the pan. Not only in the Motor Trade but in every business. I think this has been discussed on this site before. Anyway, to get good Customer Service & good value for money has to be a good thing these days so I would certainly recommend them on that alone.

    Hope this helps OP.

That's not bad value at all, they will probably change your wiper blades and hit you for another €30 or so as well though :D

I think that its average enough with a good manner of service so far and Im pretty sure Im not being ripped off. Thanks for all the advice from all of you and I'll report back when Ive had the service done!!

I wouldn't assume anything to be honest. If they don't claim to replace it, then they probably don't replace it.
As for the brake fluid, I would doubt that they test it. They may look at the level and top it up if it is quite low. However, the fluid should be replaced every two years as it absorbs water reducing braking efficiency. I would imagine that most cars over 4 years old on our road have never had it done!
    You decide though!

IIRC = If I remember correctly
    GSF = GSF

I'm not trying to pick on Sandyford Motors. I just recall the oul fella getting a full service from a Toyota main dealer and it was simply a glorified oil service with a large bill and I've been pedantic ever since then!

When you say you've been to them before, is that as an employee or as someone who has another interest in the busines

I can't help but notice the OP and aguestie have 7 and 6 posts each, (in the case of the OP all 7 posts in this thread) which must give rise to the suspicion that this thread might be an attempt to create publicity for the garage they both claim to think is so excellent. Or am I just an old cynic?

The OP thought they would change the plugs on a diesel so I reckon he isn't a trade chap :D

    A reply to ConsiderThis:
I do not see any refferance by me as to Sandyford Motors being ''excellent''. If you read back through you will see I have been asking for other opinions and recieved great response, hence feeling happy with what Im getting??

    Cynic? Maybe?
    Helpful? No!

Renault are doing a full service with brake pads for €249.

Sandyford are a Renault dealer so make sure they're offering the full package

You're obviously missing my point. If they have a deal going for service and brakes for 250, does 210 not seem a bit dear for just the service?

No outstanding evidence of shilling unfortunately/thankfully though! Don't think that the thread is not being watched though

Just something else to consider. Glow plugs on a diesel car should last the lifetime of the car. If they're telling you they need to be changed , I'd be asking them why. Glow plugs are not the same as spark plugs, they don't get scorched with carbon etc so the generally don't need to be changed.

Sounds like a bit of inside marketing to me. Lets look at the facts.

Lanky_Bastad is Declan Toner, the sales man at Sandyford Motors.

Maybe you should not use your bebo user name on boards.ie??

More details on www.sandyfordmotors.com or bebo

no it shouldn't,bfc is only meant to be done every two to three years and longlife coolant every five(usually with the cambelt change)

No. It's not 210 for the service. It's 179 as advertised in renault garages. Which means it 60 euro for genuine renault brakes ,supplied and fitted.
To be honest with you guy's on here,I see alot of people on here saying, this is a rip off, that is a rip off.But not comparing like with like.
If you buy a bottle of wine(leta say a good wine) for 30.00 euro
and then a guy comes on and say's I can get a box of wine for that.....
What I want to know is it the SAME wine....
I can go to the motorfactors and buy a set of breaks for my car for 40euro(merc) and stick them on myself.
Or I can go to merc dealer and buy the pads for 80 euro.
Or I can leave the car with merc and have pads fitted for 159 euro(incl. pads.)
Now the three prices are for three different things.

Well, If they are charging their own staff €210 for a pretty basic service, I'd say their rates to the general public are going to be pretty steep:D.

Seriously OP, I presume that business is bad, but stunts like this evidently aren't going to help. Focus on delivering better value, and the marketing will take care of itself.
