We are a company due to renew with the local C.o.C , the fee is €300 per annum and apart from the euro changeover I can't really rmember another time we used them or their services including lectures etc.
I feel they mightn't be worth the money this year as most relevant lectures seem to be done outside the chamber, are they just a bunch of back slapping fat cats?

Depends on the chamber your in. Chambers in the towns close to myself are doing a lot of work organising business after hours and networking events. You do get the usual characters at these but they do present a good opportunity to meet people.

Also behind the scenes chamber do a lot of good lobbying work that is never seen if you are not on the committee.

All depends on how active you want to become. I was a member of two chambers, have dropped one because I could never get to any of their events.
