Changing brake cables from left to right (hydrolic discs)

Having always had a bike with the right brake level connected to the rear brake I think I'm going either have to adjust to it or swap the cables over.

If I were to swap the cables over, do i need to get replacement ones, is bleeding the brakes the same as with a car and what brake fluid do I need?

Am I looking at way to much hassle and costs than it's worth? I'd have to change the cables over on the other bike as well if I get used to left level rear brake.

    No its not the same:(

what brakes do you have? depending on the brand you can just swap the levers without un-doing the hoses.

Also there are specific bleed kits, and unlike a car some bleed from the slave to the master as opposed from the master to slave...

    Some use mineral...some use dot.

Pretty sure they have avid juicys? Im pretty sure you can flip em over. You should be able to do it on any brake as long as the reservoir is not at 90 degrees to the lever.

I think some tektro allow this too.

yeah your right on the Avid bit.

By flipping them over you mean, sliding the levers of and back on the other side? Will this not leave the lever upside down?

If they are Avid Juicys you are going to have to disconnect the pipes from the Brake resovoir at the lever and re-bleed them. Your going to need this kit to bleed them and if you've never done it before alot of patience!!

    i'm 98% sure your wrong
i have a pair of avid juicy3's and in the shop when i got the bike they asked if i wanted the brakes swapped over and they just unscrewed the brakes and swapped them, there symmetrical on either side...
i actually am swapping mine back over soon so i'll let you know but i'm sure this is the way it is.....

I guess I'll find out at the weekend when I get the bike :D

Are you picking the bike up from a shop? If so get them to switch the levers. If it's from the internet then you're on your own.

As suggested above, Avid levers are symmetrical so you can just swap them left or right. You'll find full and detailed instructions on their website.

I have Avid Juicy 7s, and you can just flip them over, they work either way. I think there's a little niggly bit about swapping the contact pad adjustment knob over, but it shoudn't be too hard. There's pretty good manuals on the SRAM/ Avid site -
    http://www.sram.com/en/service/avid/view.php?catID=1&subcatID=1#

The only thing you need to think ahead about is cable length, but I shortened the cable length on mine without any experience or practice with bleeding, so it's not difficult. Just pick up the bleed kit and olives etc. from ChainReaction, and some DOT fluid from any car/ motorbike place

    Wrong.....

Your better off not replying to stuff you dont know about.

Jozi, yes just swap the levers from left to right and vice versa.

    :)

Having just swapped the levers over I can confirm that it's as simple as taking of the grips, undoing the alen bolts, sliding lever of one side, slide on other side and tighten alen bolts up again.

Any recommendations on how to get the grips on again without them twisting like they were now?

Wet your finger in your mouth, wipe it on the inside of the grip and slide it on:)

They were a bit to greasy for that :) Opted for a wet tea towel to wipe the bars clean and the inside of the grips and then dried both. They went on with little hassle, just like they came of with little hassle. I don't like twisting grips :(

Meant to say. When I asked the guy in Halford (who I know) if he would swap them he gave me a story about cables length maybe not being right, may have to get new cables cause would have to take them of the lever. Pity he didn't have a good look at it and then decide. Kept me busy for a few mins, along with checking nearly every bolt over and adjusting seat height and handle bars :)
