    Hi All,

Just wondering what I should expect to pay for a Diagnostic Check? For example, what should I expect to pay for a 1.4 Golf?

I fully understand that this equipment is expensive and and needs continuous updating. I also realise that its only as good as the person using it!

Is there an engine management light on or are you just curious?
Main dealers might have a set price to read off your fault codes, as would any independant - a rough price would be about €40/50

Yep - Light on OK. Car appears to be driving OK which I find unusual?

It could be something like a lambda probe then, but that's only a guess. Try ringing your local vw dealer tomorrow for a price - a lot of dealerships are doing their best to get in customers by lowering prices, so they might surprise you. Failing this, you're gonna need to find a good specialist or independant.

usually around €50 with a main dealer, little tip is go to a skoda or seat garage instead of vw as there labour rates will be lower, look after the euros

What? I could buy my own scanner for that price!

Researched that. There's a scanner called PPC for the volvo which is 118 squids on ebay.co.uk. It's my brothers car so didn't bother with the purchase.

Normally, I buy tools for myself and do the work myself for much less than the cost of a mechanic/dealer. Have a nice collection now.

Check your lights and indicators etc, the check light may be on for one of those. Motor factor will probably have in stock and fit bulb if that's the case. Obviously the check light should go out at that stage ;-)

Does the light go out automatically when you fix the problem or only after a reset with a scanner?

i know skoda garages charge €50 for just running the diagnostics. there's a guy up near Drumcondrath in Meath who might do it for a better price, specialises in electrical engine issues. can get you his details if you're interested

    It depends on the make/model.

    This applys to Peugeot/Citroens...

If its an intermittent fault and its read and reset by the diagnostic equip it will clear the fault.
if its a permanent fault and cleared after the problem is sorted then it will also clear the fault....If its not sorted the mil light will remain.

Alot of cases its not just a matter of turning off the mil light ..it's there
for a reason and it may take live data from the engine/abs etc to get to the root of the problem.
