A woman was T-boned by a car on vernon ave at around 6.30 today. The guards had the road closed and it looked serious, I didnt see first hand as I was driving and told to turn around.
She was taken away in a ambulance. It happened somewhere between Mt. prospect ave and the cross roads at insomnia.

Word has it she didnt have any lights:mad:

Yikes, having survived being T-boned by a jeep myself (with lights), I can only say that I hope she is okay and recovers.

eh? Im quite sorry somebody got hurt..

Ive NO sympathy for somebody who gets hit by a car in the dark while not having lights.

    Darwin and all that.

Im not somebody to come on and post a big long post saying how shocked and saddend I am. Ill call it as it is, get killed because you get hit by a car that didnt see you because you had no lights(which are a legal requirement for this very reason), then Im sorry but what did you expect?

I wouldnt be moaning if the motorist sued for damages either.

dark enough for myself and every other road user to have their lights on(no not sidelights either), bear in mind the sun wasnt exactley shining today either.

    Between 6.30 and 7pm.

Fair enough, she should have had them, true. I'm just not buying it as an excuse for the driver, if that's the case. It might have been darkening, but I was driving at that time, and I'd have picked out a cyclist with no lights, no problem.

maybe (s)he was referring to my post, but similarly, I too am sorry as I can relate to such an incident, and wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Different circumstances meant I was lucky and didn't need an ambulance (walked the bike home on its rear wheel), and I can only hope (as I stated) that she is okay.

Mind you I will say something about having lights on your bike.... my bike currently has no lights because some cnut decided it would be funny to steal same

Moral of the story, don't presume you know why her bike doesn't have lights....... some cnut may have thought it was funny to nick same during the day..........

Ive been almost caught out a few times at dusk by these morons. Not everybody is that confident they could pick out a cyclist with no lights..... usually wearing black.

But yes the car possibly should have done better. Bear in mind the T-bone I didnt see first hand so take it with a pinch of salt, but the location suggested so.

well then buy a set, not like bike shops are few and far between.

    Or

    Take them with you.

    Not a excuse.

Legally (certainly in the UK, I think here also) you actually are only required to have lights half an hour after sunset - this was 18:47 today in Dublin.

I err on the side of caution and put them on earlier but I believe this is the legal situation (there is twilight after the sun goes down.) I also put them on in heavy rain, fog etc. Not a legal requirement though.

Are there traffic lights at the junction where this occurred?

You should still have them on if its dark enogh, my sidelights on the car were on at 3.

Surely its measured in light quality and not time?

Id say a strong chance, that poxy road is 1 mile and has about 8 traffic lights on it.

If you think someone nicking your lights is a valid reason to put your life at risk and cycle in the dark with no lights ......... Darwin.

Has anyone ever played football as it is starting to get dark, but still bright out. Get in goals and try saving a few shots. You'll find, to your surprise, that you can see the ball just fine, until it starts moving.

Dont risk a driver not being able to see you.

Much as I enjoy a bit of slagging, especially on a helmet/lights/RLJ thread, slagging someone who is possibly in intensive care, based on little more than rumour and speculation, seems a bit off IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,238 ✭✭✭humbert

I was referring to the OP who is making the assumption that the accident was due to the cyclist not having lights.

I don't mind quoting stats or ranting about why you think people should have lights and how stupid not having lights is, but it seems a bit bloody petty to come on here to criticise some woman whose recently been hospitalised for not having lights on her bicycle.

Interesting and insensitive choice of words. I assume, that she was cycling at the time?

    How did you find out?

I pass through the same area regularly and I see speeding, failing to give way at junctions, illegal parking, driving/parking on the wrong side and the parking of unlit cars are a big problem in that neighbourhood

I wanted to have a go at people leaving lights on parked bikes and cycling home because someone stole their lights, but I decided this is not the thread for that.

I hope that woman is ok and is not in a critical state.

lets just hope the cyclist is ok

I don't care how this incident happened, who was at fault, or what the outcome will be, but I hope that both the woman and the driver of the car are doing ok.

A precedent was set in recent threads, that we avoided speculation on the cause of specific accidents out of respect for those involved. As we've no first hand info here, and no idea how serious the injuries, there seems little to discuss. If I'm PM'd with an update I'll reopen for fact based discussion.
