I had a green card from 1992 - Morrisson but lost it due to lack of use. What is the best way to re-apply? Will it stand to me that I have already recived one or will it go against me do you think?

It will make no difference if you had one in the past. The DV lottery is open at the moment and they only take online applications.

Could u post the proper link to the DV lottery? I've searched several times now and I either get fake ones or it says the lottery is not open

To my knowledge, once your Green Card was withdrawn you have no way to get it back. I don't know if you can re-apply in a new lottery but I'd guess that you'd be eligible for the lottery but might run into difficulties at the State Dept. interview due to losing the first card. You still need their approval.

And now for the really bad news. When you got your Morrison Visa in 1992 about 16,000 per year (over three years) were set aside for the Ireland and Northern Ireland. That special Irish allocation is long gone. In the last two DV Lotteries less than 200 Irish people got picked. So you've probably got about 1.25% the chance you originally had to get one.

The official lottery site is here. The lottery for 2011 opened a couple of weeks ago.

Try the lottery but as someone said you will have problems because you had a card already. And you can't have it renewed or reissued.

I would say to others to only enter the lottery if you are seriously going to go over and stay. The odds might be low but if you get one and don't use it you'll have a hard time getting visas in the future.

A little tip : if ever you are looking for the official site for visa information remember it has to end in .gov and not .com , .net etc..

You won't get any problems because of winning/getting a green card in the past. If you win this time and you decide to follow through then explain your reasons for not using the previous one.

When you say you lost it due to lack of use do you mean that you just got notification that you were eligible to apply & didn’t, or did you go through the application process, receive the immigration package & didn’t present it at port of entry or did you present it & actually receive permanent resident status & a green card but then left the US at a later stage?

Hopefully it’s the case that you just didn’t follow through with the application, as you can say that it didn’t suit you at the time to emigrate. Lots of people didn’t take the offer to apply up at the time, so I can’t see that as a problem.

If you went through the entire process & received your immigration pack & didn’t present it at a US port of entry, the situation isn’t that bad as there was a time limit at the time where you had to present it within a given time period, & again you could say that it didn’t suit you at the time to emigrate.

If you actually went through the entire process & actually were granted permanent resident status & received your green card, then you have a bigger problem, as green card holders are meant to be permanent residents, & if they intend to leave the US for longer than a year they are meant to apply for a re-entry permit or returning resident visa. It’s easier to get back in up to two years later, & you can apply from the US embassy in Dublin. If they have left the US for over two years they have to apply for a Returning Resident Visa

So, if this is your situation & you want to apply to re-activate or attempt to retain I’d suggest that you see an immigration lawyer who would be in the know regarding the various ins & outs of your exact situation, as technically your permanent resident status is now regarded as abandoned, & you would have a bigger problem. They could advise you properly.

If on the otherhand you simply didn’t take the offer to apply up, or did take it up & didn’t proceed to emigrate, you can easily explain this.

Have at look at immihelp.com - they have a very good Forum & of course the USCIS Website
