    Just watching the video gave me chills. Many a pilot's last sight on this side of existence is of the hill he didn't think was there.

    I didnt realise he'd actually clipped the ground and was gobsmacked when I sen the wing damage. They are incredibly lucky to be alive and I hope that muppet isnt flying any more.

    Who in there right mind trusts GPS that much to fly blindly with it alone?

    Instrument Met Conditions. In other words visibility zero and you fly using your instruments and not by looking out the window, which would be VMC or visual met conditions.:)

    IMC conditions don't have to mean zero visibilty just conditions below VFR limits. Generally you fly VFR in VMC. The PIC tried to fly VFR in IMC. If he had any sense they would filed IFR with ATC even when they were in VMC so that when they flew into IMC they wouldn't have hit the mountain. It is definitely better to fly IFR in VMC than to fly VFR in IMC or even fly IFR in IMC. As it is the PIC nearly ended up with a CFIT and as the aircraft obviously has no CVR or FDR it would have been RIP for them all and no one would have known what happened unless the they played it all back on the VCR. I hope that clears it up for everyone.

    Indeed it does..the PIC was indeed a PrIC who maybe, just maybe, deserved a little touch of the CFIT (into a soft area)

    Who in there right mind trusts GPS that much to fly blindly with it alone?

    I need to go back a chapter or two in my book (I'm only studying for my IFR ticket) but if I recall correctly, the FAA has recently approved GPS as a primary navigation device for intrument flight. The caveat to that is that they will only certify fixed installations, that way they know for sure that the antennae are in the right places and will get the proper signals: Portable devices such as the one in the video are not authorised as a primary device.

    Frankly, if I wait a year or two, the IFR Knowledge Exam is liable to be a whole hell of a lot easier. Almost all the ground-based NavAids are going away, leaving just LORAN. GPS is the new king. Pity, I always did find cutting my position with the VOR needle to be a fair bit of fun.

    Thanks for the explanation of IMC. Now try reading out look the paragraph with all the TLAs and wait for a reaction from a listener!

    1) Those guys were really lucky.
    2) Those guys are really stupid for having a GPS in an aircraft.
    3) Those guys are imbeciles for publising this video showing their idiocy.
    4) Those guys should be removed fom the gene pool for their reaction to what happened. At 2.33 on the video you can hear several men laughing as the camera goes close on the smashed wing tip.

    I am assuming that having a GPS could increase the likelihood of the pilots not paying as much attention to the actual instruments....as seems to have happened here. Am not sure, I assume there was a internal altimeter in that cockpit. And if they were flying VFR surely they should have looked at a map and noticed any high ground.

    Point taken about the post stress reaction.

    In my experience, you are correct. I fly with both a handheld and panel-mounted GPS. There is a real risk of over-reliance on the GPS at the expense of "traditional" navigation skills, situational awareness and general lookout. Since I realised this I make a point of turning on the handheld GPS and then putting it away where I can't see it. I navigate using the chart and ground reference, and the GPS is there in case I need it in an emergency.

    You assume correctly. Every plane has an altimeter, a compass and an airspeed indicator as a minimum legal requirement.

    The Ruskies flew me around many times with the downstairs Nav (IL76) using a hand held type GPS (must admit he was twisting & typing on the console so I have no idea as to what input the Garmin had)

    GPS is fine as long as you understand how it works and know its current degrade/accuracy IMHO.
