Can someone explain - in very simple, Jelly Tots terms - what the Lat/Vert operation on a Fairchild 670 does?

    No idea I'm afraid.

    Where did you see a 670 ?

its similiar to mid/side in that it can process the lateral/vertical seperatly.

Ah okay, now we're getting somewhere. If it's not too much hassle, could you elaborate on the terms in bold?

well mid/side (like on the pultec eqp1) splits the signal into (wait for it!) middle and side. allowing you to eq them seperatly from the one unit. very nice for putting a little sheen on the edges of a mix.

lat/vert on the 670 splits the signal into sum and differance and processes them seperatly thru the 2 stereo channels. basically just mid/side labelled differantly if im reading into it right.

It's not side chaining. It's middle and side. These are two completely different things.

The archaic terminology comes from the Fairchild's original application- vinyl mastering. On vinyl, lateral is the stereo information, vertical is the mono.

wot he said! You can compress the sides of the stereo field seperately to the center information. Handy for treating mixes where the vocal is too loud!
