All starting to jump on the bandwagon now:

    C30 1.6i S Starts from €23,820
    C30 1.6DRIVe S from €24,610

    S80 1.6DRIVe (oh yeah, 1.6 110bhp Diesel S80) S - €34,500
    S80 2.0D S - €36,500

V70 pricing comes down as well

    XC90 Starts from €58,660

No mention of the S40/V50 and whether they are coming down.

SO SO SO wrong, 1.6 engine in there flagship range. Next we will see a 1.6cdi S-Class

Anyway as R.O.R said, Volvo are just keeping up with the competition.

Another €2,000 off already reduced pricing.

C30 cheaper than BMW 1-Series and Audi A3 with better spec.

S80 (2.0D) Cheaper than 5 Series and A6 with better spec.

I heard an advert on the radio where they are offering €4k worth of extras free on the S40 DRIVe if you order one for 2010.

Hopefully that includes new wheels, because the standard wheels on the DRIVe are fcuking awful.

I would imagine that equivalent volvos should be cheaper than either bmws or audis despite the spec.

Yeah there terrible, can you spec other wheels?

I'd take the Volvo over the A6 anyday. Not too sure about the 5 series though.

I'd hope you can spec it with nicer wheels. They remind me of the "alloys" on the Civic Hybrid. Horrible yokes.

Which is a car from a class above the S80.

I actually think they look quite cool in a sort of retro 70's way.

And I suppose you're from the school of people who think all Volvo's are dull, boring boxes.

What is the problem people have with Volvo being a prestige brand these days, by the way? I'd nearly swear they had a bigger brand cache when they actually were boxy and sensible.

Let these people off as it continues to make these cars great second hand value.

Off topic:- I heard yesterday from someone in the trade that <snip> another </snip> dealer is about to go wollop. No loss imo. Had to deal with them a few times. Didn't like them.

Seriously though Volvo are really trying to push their sales now (and about time)

Ive always thought they were overpriced.

110bhp form an S80-sized car is beyond crap I agree. Who would buy this? Actually, come to think of it it'll probably go down a storm with Irish buyers who crave a large car to impress the neighbours and to hell with how it drives.

Small engines are the way of the (immediate) future though - compact, efficent, high power engines. For example the S60's engine will sqeeze 180bhp from 1.6 litres with CO2 of around 120g/km. That's pretty impressive. Time will tell what it does for longevity...

I dunno, I'd prefer a Volvo to a me-too BMW or Audi any day.

Actually I think the next S60, if it looks anything like this, is much nicer than a stodgy A4:
    http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/Secret-new-cars/Search-Results/Spyshots/Volvo-S60-2010-CAR-scoops-new-3-series-rival/

I don't get why the Germans should be more desirable any more. They have gone for volume and a proliferation of 'niche' models, some of which work, most of which don't. BMWs and Audis are as common as muck and are the default choice instead of a high-spec Ford or Opel.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Volvo and Saab produce over the next few years. Forget the aircraft-inspired marketing of the latter, they should be promoting their IKEA-style Scandinavian coolness and logical design to be in tune with the times and with their target market...

Those alloys are only on the "S" spec but you can buy the "SE" spec for the same price now as the "S" was.

    I rest my case then.

Go off and be happy in your four cylinder 3 Series, while the rest of us who aren't afraid to stand out from the crowd get real value out of our cars.

I quite like Volvos but I've never heard of anyone buying one for value or to stand out from the crowd. They are one of the last cars you'd buy for either. Especially the smaller ones based on the equivalent fords.

Well thats an excellent, well thought out response. I stand corrected, clearly volvos are not only the most unusual and individual car on the road but the best value cars on the road too. Oh, and they have no cars based on fords either.

    In a Volvo????

Anyway, value for money, yeah would have to say an S40 2.0d SE is nice but that's all.

I'm talking from sales figures here. Audi, BMW and MB are the mainstream volume leaders, while the likes of Volvo, Alfa, SAAB, Jaguar and Lexus are the alternative brands. Is that not too hard to understand?

Also, for used value, Volvo are easily the best value cars on the road. They depreciate heavily in this country for no reason other than perceived ignorance, making them massive bargains on the used market. Brand new, they aren't bad value either, with a high amount of standard equipment for the price.

I will be the first one to tell you by the way that every Volvo in the range today is based on a Ford, except the XC90. But who gives a damn really? Platform sharing is all over the place these days, you can't avoid it. A Ford of is also hardly a bad basis to underpin a car I don't think, so I don't see it as being much of a problem really.

Yes, because every single Volvo is dull, boring, soulless box full of safety features, just like this one:
