    Hi all,

We are thinking of changing to Mamut payroll software or something else similar as annual charges from Sage are too high.

It's for a medium sized hotel (25-45 staff depending on time of year) so everyone gets paid different amounts every week according to shifts/hours worked (also same person may work in two different departments during the same week).

I would appreciate any recommendations or opinions on payroll software options out there.

    thanks a mill:)

Big Red Book payroll is very user friendly and can be set up for differnet rates of pay such as per hour . No idea about cost .Think there is a free demo on their web site

In the past I have used Thesaurus software. Breaking down cost by department wasn't it's strongest aspect at the time but it was in it. It has the ability to email payslips which is a handy feature on a large payroll. I have the same issues with sage and the cost, I also find it a cumbersome package to use. It is good for department breakdown however.

Have used callsoft and know clients that use it and swear by it and it is nothing like the sage fees think it is 180 a year or something.

there's another one in the pot for you to use

Payback payroll is pretty good and very cheap compared to Sage.

we use infopay from lynxtech (http://www.infopay.ie). While it is very handy to use we had quiet a few bugs at the start of each year/new budget.Other than those, which are ironed out very quickly I could not fault it.

Infopay is very flexible but also very expensive €440 + vat

Would opt for quantum software, have used it in industry with many different cost depts and shift patterns. The cost is reasonable and it is very user friendly. If you have a good time management system it will export the data straight into quantum to speed up the processing. The ROS feature is also very good.

    Quantum is far too expensive.

I used Thesaurus Bureau in the past, until I found Payback a couple of years ago. For €130 plus vat, not to mention unlimited employees and employers, there's no point throwing money away for the same end result.

I use infopay, find it very easy to use, www.infopay.ie have used Saged in the pasted, but find Infopay much easier and if you make mistakes, very easy to fix

Before you replace micropay you should check you are on the correct contract price. There is different prices based on number of employees. Ie 30, 100, 300 etc. You maybe on a 300 or 500 contract when you only need a 100 one

The hardest part of moving somebody from a manual payroll to computerised system is generally fixing all the little mistakes made in calculations.

I wouldn't recommend Manual payroll to anyone unless that's your thing. It would be a huge waste of time imo .

I love doing payroll and I love doing it manually :) Systems are useful for large amounts of staff but any organisation with 60 staff or less should do it manually. I get great satisfaction doing manual calc's and i feel it's really handy when customers or Revenue query calc's as answers are readily available. TDC's are real handy.
I cannot understand how anyone would waste valuable time in any organisation doing manual payroll.
Most organisations seek to add to their bottom line by having their staff involved in profit generating activites.Wasting company time on non core activity like manual payroll calculation is seriously irresponsible where an organisation is seeking to survive in these difficult times.
The amount of time wasted in doing end of year manual P35 and P60's alone justify the cost effectiveness of either outsourcing payroll or at the very least buying a payroll package( we currently sell Thesaurus Payroll Software at a discount on the Thesaurus price)
Visit www.paynowpayoll.com for outsourcing and software options.

I would recommend thesaurus in agreement with previous posts. We use it in our business, its solid and reliable and gives very good reports which can be exported to excel if you need to manipulate the reports. What is goog about the pogramme is that it is a set annual cost, updates are available online, max one hour training for someone with no payroll experience or very easy for someone who has used computer payroll software before. Prints payslips & P60's on plain paper so no specialised stationery costs. Links well with ROS.
