    First Holiday Together

Ok, well basically me and the OH are talkin about going away in March as a valentine/birthday present, its something we both want to do,

We said it would be a short city break, just as we havent ever travelled before together, now ive always wanted to head to Rome & Venice, no particualr reason they just always sound fab, we checked out maybe spending 2 nights in each, but i feel that might be a bit tiring,

Im just looking for peoples opinions on both areas, were both 22 but are more interested in sightseen etc than partying im sure we may venture out for a night or 2,

Anywho thanks for reading hope u can help :)

I haven't been to Venice, but have been to Rome and can highly recommend it. I think 2 nights in each city would be too short. There is quite a distance between Rome and Venice, you would be looking at 5-6hrs approx on a train, that's a good chunk of one day gone already. Why don't you concentrate on one city for this trip and save the other for another time? 4 nights is a perfect amount of time in Rome. That will give you time to see the main sights, but also leave enough time for just wandering around, soaking in the atmosphere. It is a very romantic city, I think it is a great choice for a first couples trip!

I've been to both Rome and Venice several times and would suggest you pick Rome as your destination. It is truly a wonderful city.

I've never been to Rome (Never appealed to me for some reason) but i can vouch for venice. amazing place that words cannot describe.

I would agree though, Rome to Venice is a long trip so i would do them individually, although two nights is probably enough for Venice.

If you do Venice on its own, try and spend a night in Verona. A warm evening in Verona sitting by the Arena listening to an Opera is lovely. it is also very romantic, Romeo and Juliet were from Verona (theoretically).

    Rome. Breathtaking city.

Don't try to visit both in one short trip. At 22, you have plenty of time for further excursions.

I have been to both, and really enjoyed them. Ask me today which i prefer, and I might say Rome. Tomorrow the answer might be Venice. In a sense, it doesn't matter. Either would be a great experience.

In your position, I think I would be guided by the market. Do a bit of research on what deals you can get, and go for the best prices. Then put the other destination in the diary for next year.

[Check dates for the Carnival in Venice. It's a big deal, but prices for accommodation might be higher.]

this topic has come up here before, with ryanair offering cheap flights you can easily do both and florence/pisa http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055613942&page=2

neither rome or venice are great nightlife wise anyway, i was in rome for new years eve and there was barely anyone in the bars we visited after 12am

They're both very special places but I'd go for Rome just for its breathtaking gravitas.

Good advice above... both are worth going to but 2 days in Rome isn't enough time although it is for Venice. As someone else said combine Venice with Verona and keep Rome as a separate trip. I'd go for which ever you got best value with for March & go back to the other again. (I've been to Venice once and Rome several times so you know my favorite city).

Rome without a doubt it is such a fantastic city. 4 days in Venice is too long we were there for 3 days (spent 4 days in Salzburg, got the overnight train, 8 hours) and were bored after a day. there is very little to see, just wander the streets but there is no nightlife.

I wanna take a trip back to Rome next year sometime!

    Have a ball

I want to add a different opinion from those who said that two days are enough for Venice. There is plenty to see there, including visiting the neighbouring islands in the lagoon (not at all difficult: the vaporetti - water-buses - serve them).

I don't think it's a night-life destination unless your idea of night-life is a nice (and, in Venice, expensive) meal in the right company.
