Badges We Collected As Kids

I wonder how many of us collected badges and pins as kids that we wore with pride like medals on our blazers and jumpers. My trick was to crawl all over the Spring Show at Ballsbridge and pester the myriad of trade stands until they yielded up a coveted tin badge.

If I search hard enough I can find several still lying around the house. My most prized is a 1957 Urney Planetman badge given to members of the Urney club. They never sent me any chocolate though!

Dennis the Menace one (as above, don't forget the hairy Gnasher one too!) and Safe Cross Code.

Is this it? Was it as far back as 1957? My God - 52 years ago and I can remember the excitement when it arrived!

Dochara, yes that's the one. Mine is in more warn condition but its the same. Yes 1957. There was a wave of interest in Sc Fi at that time. Radio Luxembourg had been running Dan dare for a couple of years and BBC's fabulous Journey into Space scare the pants off us. The Quatermass mysteries were also big in the cinema. However as soon as Sputnik 1 went up, suddenly space became real. Enter Urney Planetman. In fairness his badge makes him look more like the guy from the Green Cross Code.

I used to collect Robinsons Golly badges and had dozens of them at one time. They were great to swap with people but they disappeared in the flowing tide of political correctness.

You used to get any band you wanted in the form of a badge, usually sold in record shops- obviously the Specials/Maddness & Ska badges had their following- CND badges were big in the 80s, along with U2 badges, The Who, The Jam- do people still wear these to the degreee they did years ago?
Seam to recall I had a Desperate Dan pie eaters club badge along with the two Beano badges of Denis and Knasher

Most of the Thomson comics (published in Scotland) all produced badges as promotional items. At various times there were promotional badges cov ering characters from The Beano, The Dandy, The Beezer, The Topper and Bunty. I had a Dan dare badge from the Eagle once as well
