What a disaster!

    Hi guys.
    Bit of a sob story here. I had just got my handicap down to 8 and won the Foresomes match play at my club about a month ago.
    Everything was looking good and I had just taken a couple of short game lessons with the intention of practicing over the winter in the hope of getting lower.
    Last wednesday im out walking the dog when I slipped down a grass bank and suffered a spiral fracture just above my left ankle. Agony is not the word.
    I had surgery to repair the damage and insert a plate and screws into my leg.
    Im now confined to total bed rest for 2 weeks and the surgeon tells me the break was so bad I may have long term trouble with the ankle joint.
    Its impossibel to say how this will effect my golf but im hoping and praying its not too bad.
    So you guys who get to play over the winter months enjoy it no matter how badly you play. Remember you could be me, stuck in a cast for up to 12 weeks and facing lots of phisio just to get back on my feet again.
    Im trying to keep a positive attitude but jesus its hard when the boredom sets in. I suppose it woud have been much worse had it happened in may or june and at least I have the winter to recover.:rolleyes:

    Sorry to hear the bad news rafa, i'm in the same boat at the mo (fractured my left ankle 3 weeks ago, shortly after winning golfer of the year with my society, and had a plate fitted although doesn't sound like as bad a break as yours). Was in last week to have the stitches out and the cast replaced. They were very happy with the healing, etc... so so far I'm on the right road. Have this new cast on for another 3 weeks and then I'm on to the physio assuming all goes to plan. Doc reckons it'll be the new year before I'm back playing. Its so bloody frustrating, but as a few people said to me, once you get back a bit mobile it'll give you a good chance to concentrate on putting & short game, so try and keep some kind of positive attitude if you can. The cabin fever is the worst part of it all!!!

    Best of luck with the recovery...but do whatever the Doc says and hopefully you can get back to the game sooner rather than later

    Thanks for the support mate. You are totally spot on about the cabin fever.....going mad lying here. Theres only so much tv, music and surfing you can do before the boredom sets it. Sleeping is the worst for me, lying on my back with my leg propped up...gets very uncomfortable after a while. Suppose we just have to grin and bear it:D

    Bad luck buddy. Time to get yourself an X-box and the Tiger Woods game. :D

    I did the same while playing football and came back too soon, spent an extra 4 weeks out. So wait untill your at least 90% fit.

    Wise words indeed - heed your doctor and don't rush back too soon. Do all the exercises he/she gives you and find some other way to while away the hours. A friend was laid up (also a bad ankle injury) and he set up a room with four plastic cups at different distances and different positions in front of the chair where he sat. Then he leaned to the side and started rolling golf balls into the cups, trying to control pace and accuracy. He did it every day for six weeks and his control on the putting green when he came back was phenomenal.

    Good luck with the recovery and stay optimistic

    Good advice. Its total rest for 2 weeks first and then first cast off and see what the story is. Its amazing the ammount of sport and other dangrous stuff I did without serious damage and then I break my leg walking the dog:rolleyes:

    you'll be fine once your any bit mobile,

    had knee problems myself a couple of times and found once I was mobile and got to the stage where I was going to the gym it wasn't too bad at least your setting targets for yourself then and you can see the end coming,......and getting a bit fitter than I would have been before was no bad thing either(still hate the f'ing place but try to go a few times a week this time of year)

    not the worst time to be out anyway weather is getting crappy,
    good luck take it easy

    Thanks for the support guys. Hope to comeback even stronger when its all done but its hard to stay positive.
    Might look into getting an Xbox maybe. :D

    You could watch lots of games of Rafa's Reds - but not this years games as they won't cheer you up.

    I'm sorry to hear that your injury is quite bad.

    Every time I go out I think of people who aren't able to do what I can do - walk a lovely course and watch at least one of my shots soar straight down the middle or hear one birdie putt drop.

    I'm a recent nay-sayer of slogging it out all winter and into the new season. Definitely a better plan IMO to take a rest, chill out, get a lie in at the weekend, watch the football etc... and then the enthusiasm starts to bite in the new year when you miss getting out. You don't get that if you've been soaked and freezing week in, week out for a couple of months.

    So fk it. Put the feet up. Maybe grab yourself a Wii or something, and when the time comes, and the weather clears up, and you've got Barton Cup etc in your sights, then use that pent up enthusiasm, and Rotella books read, and you'll be refreshed and play well once you get the rust off.

    That's my experience anyway.

    Guys thanks for all the support. Maybe the rest will do me good. Hope to be able to get back into playing maybe feb or march. Should be back to full fitness for the summer months with any luck.

    I was in the same boat at the start of the year. I developed septic arthritis in my ankle and was operated on. I was out foe a relatively short time 12 weeks compared to your recovery time. I missed out on Barton, Junior Cup but came back stronger than ever dropping 2.1 in just three weeks. So chin up and as Sheet says enjoy the break as other's get soaked week in week out and their swing goes to pot in strong winds etc.

    Get well soon Rafa,

    I'm kinda in the same boat as you now. Injured my neck & am out of work 5 weeks at this stage. Know what you mean about cabin fever, would drive you bonkers :)
    At least i'm not confined to bed & am able to get out for a short walk every day.

    As others have said, do as the doc says & hopefully you'll be sorted quickly.

    Best of luck with the recovery... as the lads said, take plenty of time to recover because there'll be no rush to get out in the muck of the winter and you want to be well sorted for the (muck of the) spring!
    Sharpen up the head side of things with the rotella books and by the time you get back out there you'll be overflowing with confidence.

    Thanks for the kind wishes lads. Might read Dr Bobs books again alright. Keeping cabin fever at bay is the hard part lads. Hopefully will be able to practice my putting in 6 or 8 weeks maybe.

    Cheers mate. Yeah I found I've had a lot more restlesss nights trying to sleep comfortably. Getting some lower back pain.

    I've got access to work from home now, so thats passing the days thankfully. Really looking forward to getting back mobile and into the real world though!!!

    Me too mate. Finding it very tough at the moment. Have been lying here more or less constantly on my back since last friday. Doc told me to lie for a week before I spend anytime up and moving around........2 more days to go.:rolleyes:

    Well I was playing rugby 3 weeks ago and had my fibia snapped at the ankle too, so I know exactly what you are going through! have another 4 weeks left in the cast at the moment, and hoping to get back to work next week.

    I have stayed really positive for the last 3 weeks and it has made life so much easier. What I found handy was to make a list of things you have been trying to do over the last X months of things you couldn't normally do when your busy.

    I have caught up on Entourage and bought the Office USA 5 seasons which is going to keep me going for the next while.

    Best advice I can give you is to see your friends as regularly as possible have them come over for a poker night/chat or dinner etc, keep the mind ticking over and also to get outside even for 10 mins every day and the fresh air does wonders. Once you get past the second week it really does fly by.

    Good advice and thankyou for it. My first week is up today and I feel a tiny tiny bit better. Tomorrow im going downstairs for the first time I hope. Just to sit at the kitchen table and have a cuppa will be a pleasure.
    Hope to be able to rest up on the couch too as opposed to lying here in bed the whole time. In fairness my mates have been good, calling in regularly and having a chat. Roll on another week so I can get this cast off and see how the damage is healing up.:)

    Had the first cast off today. Xray showed im on the mend. Have a 6inch plate and 7 screws for my trouble:rolleyes:
    New cast on for another 4 weeks and then its physio work.

    Glad to hear things are going well. I get the cast off 2 weeks from today, then physio time.

    Have started to put some weight on it, and have managed to venture out a couple of times.

    Lookin forward to getting my skinny, pale, stiff, (probably) stinking, left leg back in action :o

    Keep up the positivity mate, sounds like you're well on the road to recovery

    Great stuff mate, 2 weeks isnt that bad, it'll fly in;)
    Its amazing to see how much muscle wastage there is in 2 weeks. My calf is almost shrunk by half and even my upper leg muscles are shrinking to.
    I wonder what physio will involve and how long it will take the leg built back up to what it was?

    Yeah, not too sure yet. But soon as I see the physio I'll give you an update. I would imagine they'll be advising mostly low impact exercise like a bike or swimming?

    Thanks mate. I was thinking of swimming as much as I can when I get sorted. I was in the process of organising a golfing trip to spain in feburary when I had my accident. Still hope I might be able to go though.;)

    after a few knee injuries for myself it was.......cycling,crosstrainer,some weights(don't have the name for it:confused: but the one where sit down and you extend your leg forward pushing on the platform in front of you),and swimming freestyle stroke not breaststroke.......still go there 2-3 times a week & still hate the fkn place:mad:, only for the sauna & jacuzzi at the end I think I'd never make it

    time......depends on how often you go how many reps etc,your physio will put you on the right road,


    p.s. get yourself an ipod or something find it very handy.....

    Thanks mate. Have to confess ive never been a huge fan of the Gym either. Its going to be tough but I want to get back as soon as I can withouth causing any more damage though.
    Must get an ipod and put some good music on it.
