Simple thing, genuine question. Would you swap one of these for the other?

    Hi Tommy,

Presuming you mean would you swap the Merc for an E36 convertible the answer is very simple and will be echoed by most if not all users here: NO FCUKING WAY!

However if someone is prepared to give you the Merc for the cab take his hand off!

Note: I am a BMW fan before Merc and I reckon the E36 is without a shadow of a doubt the E30 of the future. If you have money to spare buy as many of them as you can while they're cheap and sub 20 years. They will be worth serious money in the next ten years!

Not too much to go on, but on the face of it I'd keep the CE.

Depends on what you really want I suppose, I'd take the BMW though, those Mercs never did much for me tbh.

Simple answer. If you feel happy about swapping your car, it's all good. Swapping in a stagnant market where nothing sells is one of the small virtues of the recession we are in. You'll get a new (to you) car and it won't cost you anything. That will make you feel good. Anyone else notice that people are nicer about these things and towards each other in recent times?

Absolutely. I think the irish are not wired-up to have a lot of money.

Would depend on the condition of the Merc - though it looks great!
How is it fixed for a Irish winter? Foggy windows, tepid heating, cold battery? Do you have a garage?

As unkel suggests, a swap can get you a "new" car without any buying and selling mess involved. As long as the realistic OMV of the cars are similar, and you want a change go for it.

2 years ago I would have said keep the Merc - but I just got rid of my "72 for something a bit less drafty and a bit more winter-proof. :)

A little more detail, the BMW is mine, 318 auto 110,000 miles. I bought an SL500 in jan and am not using the BMW. not a good time to sell it although to be honest i haven't been killing myself trying. The merc is a 1970 250ce, new front wings, bubbles under the centre of the rear screen, rust under the rear bumper. These w114's rotted and i don't have pots of money, but what a car. the practical me says sell the bm for cash and use the money to put amg II wheels on the sl, the other me really fancies the ce.

Unless you have the time and the money, I'd say avoid the CE - unless it's an absolute minter and doesn't need any work done. I've got one and it's full of rust, the bits you can see will be the tip of the iceberg!
