Yeah, there was a meeting with the heads of school and various representatives of the student union. Some of the societies are shocking, but some are suffering at the hands of the cut backs it seems.

I've never join societies though so...

It's poor form unless your details were entered wrong because your handwriting is mad. I found some people filled in forms with elvish or something so we had no idea what they were saying.

Also, the @socs.dit.ie email addresses aren't working at the moment it seems. It caught us out last week but luckily we noticed and had a gmail for backup.

There are good societies and bad societies for this. The subaqua club I joined twice and never heard anything form them either time but at the end of last year in about april I went about finding a Diving club and got in touch with the DIT club. Found that the club is pretty much seperate form the college all together and they have a small number of active college members. If you get in touch with them they will be glad to bring you down and let you join in. I went for a few weeks and was about tojoin when I got in a bad accident and havent been able to really swim since so didnt join in the end. It is a good club but hard to get info about.

Basicly there is training twice a week if you want but generally people just go once a week, there are pretty regular snorkles around dublin and then a few weekends away. The training can be pretty intense but it is a really good work out and gets you ready for the open water.

As I said I didnt join in the end but would still like too. Joining as a student you get good discounts generally as the college will subsidise some of your dive expenses and members fees.

None of those mentioned above are societies they are all Sports 'clubs'...Alot of the clubs in DIT are run by only a handful of people who are only in the college for 3-4 years, therefore theres never really a club structure built up. The equipment and facilities are all there so just turn up at a training session and get involved, dont wait for them to come to you. The scheduals for training are all up on the sports website... At the moment all clubs are being screwed by the college. They cant have training sessions for the next week or so because the college has decided that they need to carry out risk assessment and get personal indemnity insurance for all coaches, they had the whole summer to sort themselves out but that would of interfeered with they're summer hols, typical...The embargo on the re-issuing of coaching contracts at the start of the year has also set clubs back a bit. This is probably the main reason you hav'nt heard from them, they just hav'nt started yet...But as i said earlier, dont wait for them to come to you...Alot of these guys are busy and will only send out details or events and competitions etc.

I feel the need to correct the above as many of the allegations above are untrue and very unfair to the staff who have been working very hard to get sports clubs back working as quickly as they can. The DIT sports dapartment have lost over 40 employees in the past three months. The remaining 7 staff are doing their very best.

Until the end of September it was thought the HEA would give approval for the staff working in sports to have their contracts renewed, particularly as they're funded from the Student Services Charge not the government grant. In September we believed the sports coaches would not be affected - and I posted here on Sept 20th and at the time we believed the only area affected would be the gym/swimming pool. As we now no longer have sports coaches or staff to supervise the sports facilities, we have had to put in place a system whereby clubs could hire their coaches directly, and we could ensure that the students training in the clubs would be training safely. Just in the past week other issues arose which meant that a full risk assessment had to be carried out.

There seems to be misinformation being spread that all these issues were known about during the summer. They were not. The staff in Sports are working flat out to get the clubs and facilities back open. The deserve a bit of support for their work instead of comments like "it would have interfeered with they're summer hols".

If you want to discuss this matter further my number is on the website.

    Brian Gormley
    Manager of Campus Life

(and while I'm at it, I'll respond to the OP - neither Clubs nor Societies are sh1t. They're run by students for students, with the support of the college, and by and large they do a brilliant job. The students running them are busy, and you may have to look up their timetable of events yourself to get involved. I hope you enjoy them, and I'm sorry that the clubs have been affected by the staffing cuts, but we are working to get them back on track as quickly as possible)

well i'm glad i got some very good response's because no one ever tells you about these things when your signing up. they paint this wonderful picture of the soc there involved in but never give the reality of the stituation we are in with all the cuts and so forth.

i must confess that i did'nt kill myself trying to get in contact( just a few e mails) and i'll certainly try a lot harder after the review week.I know how hard it is working short staffed and under pressure so i'll take this oppertunity to thank all the people doing all the extra work since the cut backs began.

sorry if i seemed a bit p1ssed off, but i was @ the time!!!

Brian firstly can i compliment you on such a prompt reply. Its good to see the college are keeping an eye on things like this.

In the above post i never once mentioned the Sports department how ever i will agree that i never clarified that i did not mean the sports department. Like everyone the sports Department has to answer to some one above them and i assumed this is where the problem is coming from. As for the embargo on the hiring of new staff we all know this problem has came right from the top, the department of education.

Secondly i have never had any problems when dealing with the sports office they have always went out of they're way to do everything they could to help us. Any accusation i made regarding the college failing to forsee the problems regarding the rehiring of staff was unfair. And i know they've been doing everything they could to deal with the issues. However in my opinion, i find it hard to believe that no one could have forseen at least some of the issues that arose with respect to the reqruitent freeze, the public were aware of the reqruitment feeze as far back as march of last year( however the details may have not been known). As i know very little of the details regarding this situation i will agree that my opinion on the situation could mean squat. However it is my opinin and i have no problem stating it.

Once again thanks to all the gang in the sports office for doing a great job and i'm sure they will have the clubs up and running as soon as possible. I have personally recieved calls from the sports office well after they're usual clocking off time of 5pm..This is only testement to fact they are working hard to rectify the situation.

It is clearly not the sports office who is responsible for this situation, however i would like to hear from who ever is.

Well Tommy, many thanks for a dignified and gracious response to my (possibly less than dignified and gracious) response. And thanks also for clarifying that you weren't referring to the sports staff, who have been under serious pressure in recent months.

I can honestly say that everyone from the President down is very supportive of getting sports back on track. As proof of the goodwill, I thought the fact that all the Directors and the President attended a public meeting with students last night was very welcome. I've worked in three other Universities - and in other colleges the management just wouldn't have responded to the request. Where problems have arisen, it's not because staff in DIT are being obstructive, but people are under ferocious pressure from outside bodies to comply with new rules and regulations - and the penalties for non-compliance would mean even more brutal cutbacks for the Institute.

If you're looking for somebody to blame - I don't want to get political - but maybe if you start with the bankers and work from there??

After the public meeting last night, I got the feeling that everybody, staff and students, was willing to work together to get through these problems, which was great.

    Thanks again,
    Brian

i've have been in DIT 4 years now and the socs are a mixed bag there are some socs that sign up people that are not heard from again. I know the business soc in my 1st year was an example. In other cases the handwriting on forms is a joke i know as a chair of a soc i had great fun trying to tell it is a d b or possible a 6. If you go in to socs.dit.ie you can contact the soc's if you have heard nothing from them and see what the story is. It might simple be a case the chair or committee have lost faith in soc's. i signed up 30 people to my soc and 25 seem to be actual people so far from two events and about 6 emails i have heard from 9 i think i have a good plan for things to do for the year but need people. So rather then come on to boards and b1tch head out and train with the cricket team go to mountjoy and learn sign with a new soc over there im glad to see gracing DIT again. And if push comes to shove pokerinfingal get offline and try to bring the DIT poker soc back to life then you have a right to complain (if) it fails. And dont give out about this being my 1st post on boards i post regualy but decided for this post not to use my normal username

What socs in particular are you p'd off about not gettin back to you ?? :o

Could be an issue of bad number or email on signups day.

Its happened a couple of times to us at gamesoc unfortunately :(

Did a postgrad in DIT last year and was shocked how bad the socs/sports clubs were.

Like the op I got absolutely no replies from the clubs, website are non-existent and there's very little communal atmosphere with the clubs.

Im sure there are a small handful of really really good clubs (as Im sure there is a handful of really really shocking ones) but the majority of clubs do seem to be rather rag-tag and not reaching their potential.

Ive seen new socs/clubs start up in other colleges with few resources but still being run enthusiastically and effectively so there's no excuses with great success. DIT really needs to get its act together on this front imo.

3 years now in DIT, and I am an active member of ONE society.
Netsoc, what would I do without thee...

Grossly offending the religious societies would be fun though....
Plenty of socs, just need to look around. SU isn't scheduling much these days.
