the radio display is on the dash as you can see.

the display isint actually working where as it is displaying as it should be but it looks as if there are bulbs missing, but they dont use bulbs...

basically im looking at half letters and half words cos of it.

anybody know any causes of this ?

    cheers,

They use LED's if I'm not mistaken, and more than likely they've blown, pull it out and take a peek in there :) Or maybe it's as simple as a loose connection.

TBH i have no idea how to get that out ! or even look behind it.

if it was the LED's (they actually are according to another mechanic so i'll take your word for it.) would cost much to repair ?

loose connection, well it never changes in that its not one day these ones arent working are the others are, its always the same one's that are broken

Not even 2 quid for an LED, so yeah it's fairly cheap :L

And to get it out, look under the lip of the clocks, cos by the look of it your unit is also part of the clocks, so there should be 3 or so screws holding it in place, whip em out and click out the whole clock set, it should come with it :)

    oh lovely,

the unit is stuck to the speedo and all. would that make a difference. How would one remove the big plastic panel that covers all this ? :)

I'm only up the road from ya, so if you want to, you can drop up and we'll head off to Halfords, get a couple LEDS and I'll throw em in for ya :D

Providing you have a screwdriver

how very generous of you :)

the chap that we bought the car from actually gave us quite a few things with it, including some bulbs,(pic)

would they be this lil fella's by any chance ? only 2 left from the box he gave us and they are very tiny indeed.

AFAIK they are not leds. It's a dot matrix display. A lot of older bmw's suffer from the same thing. You could try and reflow all the solder on the board, but its a bit hit and miss. maybe try picking up a display from a breakers yard?
    Ebay have replacements

Well, after seeing that now, I'm stumped :L

Although, I'll bring you to a couple breakers if you dont know of any, and would motorfactors have them, CMAR?

i will be heading down to kinsella's scrap yard most likely tomorrow to get a radio and 2 headrests out of them, i'll take a look at their dash's while im at it and if i cant get anything from there i'll definitely get back to you lads here.

well cheers for the help lads.

went up to the scrap yard at the redcow and your man had a good few vectra's lying about, still does.

got a few bits and pieces out of it and sorted the display,

looked at the old display in the car and we couldn't see anything wrong,

but tis all sorted now and cheers for the help lads.

Midnight: cheers for telling us how to take it out, nearly got stuck with it :o

    Cheers lads,
