Has anyone heard any rumblings about an iPhone App for the new RTE player service? It's fab, you can re-watch any RTE show online for up to 3 weeks after it's broadcast.

that would be pretty awesome, however Doesnt the Iphone/ipod touch not handle flash?

I don't think RTE player is flash based. I think it's Real Player/Windows Media. Which is a moot point as neither will player on the iPhone. A dedicated app is what's needed and I bet we'll see one. After everyone else has done it or when it's no longer necessary.

rte player is entirely flash based. This is what they have on their faqs re iphone/nokia/blackberry:
The RTÉ player was designed to run on most desktop PCs and laptops. We are continually researching ways to improve the RTÉ player experience and we plan to make the service available across more platforms in the future.

BBC released an iPlayer app for the iPhone so I can't see why RTE can't.

I was thinking of the Live coverage for matches I watch from time to time on the main site. They're real player/windows media. Never really use RTE Player.

Funds? Resources? Initiative? Look at the whole Digital Broadcasting saga (both audio and TV).

RTE are in financial trouble, I can't really seeing anyone agreeing to pay for something like this.

Unless you want the TV licence to increase to 250 Euro. :)

Spot on here Tom, there isn't really any incentive to RTE to do this. Streaming media from what i have seen of it on RTE's site is stripped of advertisements so there isn't really any additional revenue stream to make for them, considering the extra work and hassle involved in converting these to work on the iphone.

It depends what way you look at it, should content providers support all the platforms that are not supporting each other?

i.e Apple fall out with Adobe and won't support flash, which is practically the standard now. Should all content providers then have to develop special apps for their hardware or should they just sort out flash support themselves?

I'm sure RTE could shave some money off some unnecessary quack shows that they shell out for... I'd love to see an RTE player app.

Apple realised early doors that if they supported Flash on the iPhone, that people could just develop apps as a Flash App, meaning that Apple lose out on money from SDK's being sold and they lose control over what is running on their system.

They can spout as much waffle as they like about ensuring quality control for what is available, but it's clearly just about revenue they can shave off selling apps because there's some amount of tosh available in the App store that shouldn't be there if they were worried about quality control.

Unfortunately it means that most of the video sites on the Net have to go back and redevelop an app for the iPhone specifically, or they have to host the files in MP4 format also. (like bbc.co.uk/iplayer if you have a UK IP address).

Saw a demo of the rte player @young scientist exhibition back in January, asked the lad from rte about iPhone or mobile support, a la BBC, but he said they had no plans.
I guess if they did their original encoding in h.264 then outputing them as flv or m4v would be straight forward.

Then again there are prob some business reasons why they are not supporting this.

They could release a premium or ad supported app for iPhone, maybe a developer could approach them about this.

    Not a bad idea.

I don't think it's anything to do with Flash support, RTEs streaming is in both Real Player and Windows Media (just looking at the website now).

The iPhone doesn't support either format, so it is a moot point anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 429 ✭✭WezzyB

There a iPhone developers who have 'custom content' apps that will do video/audio/pics for products like movies and bands.
Would be easy to do same for a range of rte programs, i.e.

Fair city, show guides, episode catchup, feedback.

Late late show, competition entry, dial premium numbers for you! Submit feedback for ticker, during debates etc.

only on the main website, the rte player is purely flash. Presumably the rest of the site will follow.

Yep, it's all flash 10. My understanding and experience is that flash gives a much better user experience, it doesn't have so much of the constant pausing and buffering, allows proper scrubbing etc. It waits and then once going seems very reliable. realplayer and mediaplayer haven't the same qualities. I'd expect the rest of the rte content to move in that direction. Youtube, metacafe, reuters, bbc etc led the way to flash and it seems the standard that isn't going to go away. apple will have to support it eventually imo.

eircom music hub works on iphone if you download an app called crazy remote. Uses a pc to send the music to iphone. Its amazing I use it every day! Rte player works flawlessly too on my iphone and ipad!

Crazy Remote is pretty useless as it doesn't work on Macs only on white sliced pans (PCs).

With the impending formal release of HTML 5 about to happen, the big websites like Youtube are moving away from flash because video embedding is supported out of the box. Flash will be redundant in terms of videos from now on.

The W3C have stated that the HTML 5 standard should be completed by mid 2014. I don't see Flash disappearing any time soon.

Yeah, finished completely. Almost all modern browsers support it at the moment and that's why Youtube have moved that way.

We'll see who's right about flash disappearing as a video embedding tool sometime soon

PCs aren't entirely useless, they keep Top Gear viewers occupied and off the streets!

On a serious note though, RTE's new iPad app; RTE News Now, is brilliant.

oh, that's good, didn't know RTE News Now for ipad was out. Nice.

RTE Player will be heading ti iOS and Android devices bringing its catch up service to smartphones Along with letting you watch RTE TV the app will have a social media intergration letting you share your favourite shows The RTE Player app will arrive later this year

This article Taken from the Irish Indepedents "mobile life"

Android devices have no problem accessing RTE player so for them having a RTE Player app is not any big news

However i would like to see RTE player for iOS devices. But for me it’s no longer "must have" as it once was.

We already have all Irish live channels via Magnet, it works very well on Ipad and 4oD app for Ipad covers most of my other random viewing on the Ipad.
