Career change Accountancy to Banking? Advice.

I’m a qualified accountant (ACA) and also qualified tax consultant (AITI-Ireland) coming out of contract very soon. I’m contemplating a career change, moving into the investment banking world/corporate finance, having previously previously done an internship with a leading investment bank in London.

Have read a lot about CFA (chartered financial analyst) qualification as way of increasing both my base knowledge of markets/finance world while boosting my job prospects. Little bit worried bout having to get 4 yrs practice experience before becoming a member.

    Anyone have any thoughts on:
    1. this potential qualification,
    2. jobs suited to my already held qualification within the investment banking/corporate finance world
    3. the potential career move from accountancy

Banking has always paid alot better than practice. Despite the bad publicity, banks arent going anywhere.

You'll have to move to London realistically as there isn't much of an industry in Ireland, especially at the moment. ACA can get you into M&A in the banks. If you want to work in more of a pure markets area you'd need more of a maths / engineering / pure economics background or have CFA. The easiest way to transition for you would be to target M+A, or as a research analyst as second best option. M+A has the worst hours for least reward in the I-banking world - you'd have to slog it out for a few years in the churn and burn. Research analyst is not for everybody - you'd have to be able to work very independently and like writing reports.
