BMW - accessing boot

My husband has a '95 320 which, as a result of him not driving it in a few months, is completely dead, the remote locking doesn't even work on it.

So, he wants to jump start it but the jump leads are in the boot! the Key won't manually open the boot and I can't seem to find a way of opening it from inside the car. Any suggestions? Can it be opened from inside and if so where is the catch?

Noone seems to own jump leads these days (well noone I know anyway!) so only option will be to buy them if I can't get to the boot.

    Thanking you!

The key will manually open the boot. There are three positions for the key. Try turning the key further.

Unless the car has folding rear seats you won't be able to easily get at the boot from the inside. You could remove the rear seat backrest (you'll generally have to remove the seat base first), but I don't know what you'll find. I'm surprised the key won't open the boot, I take it you've tried it both ways?

I've tried turning the key until I thought it was going to break. It won't turn at all. And yep I've tried turning it both ways.

I did think about folding down the seats, but again, I think this has to be done from the boot.

erm, I don't think so? it's totally and utterly flat?

it's also parked in a tight spot facing a wall so that would have it's own issues right there!

You can buy battery chargers that charge the battery through the cigar lighter socket I believe. They wouldn't be able to start the car as I'm sure the lighter cabling would not stand the power, but might put in enough charge to get the central locking working at least. Having said that, I've never tried them, so I must qualify this advice. Maybe Halfords or someone has them?

    Check your insurance

Some comprehensive policies come with breakdown assist of some sort

They will come out to the house and carge the battery enough to start your car for you

I think there was something in bargain alerts about Aldi/Lidl selling jump leads for €4 last week so that might be another option if you can't get into the boot

I think that's the one I heard about. Wasn't it on Boards somewhere?

Some service stations lend leads out if you leave them a deposit.

There are "+" and "-" points under the bonnet, even though the battery might be in the boot (well .. it's in the E39 5-series, under the rear-seat in the E34 5-series, dunno where it is in the 3-series).

Those cars can be jumped without access to the boot. A jumplead wouldn't really be that costly, would it ? Not worse than a trip to Halfords.

    Thanks all,

Insurance will only come out to the car if it's a certain amount of miles from home

Yeh the battery is under the bonnet so accessing it isn't a problem - although I'll have to borrow a car to jump it off as my volvo battery is in the boot and can't jump start another car apparently!

I'm in shankill in dublin but if I can get jump leads for 4 squids then I'll be having those!

This is correct and it's where you're supposed to jump start it - not at the battery. The Positive has a bright red cover on it

same as my own car so! Thanks.

Still, can't get to the boot at the moment so will have to figure that one out

Just looked at the manual of my 3 series,it says you can give a jump start using the same terminals under the bonnet,so it would probably be OK to use the terminals of your Volvo to jump start the BMW....still need jump leads tho'
