    One the great legal and media figures of the post war era passed away yesterday. Best known as a presenter and commentator in recent decades (esp for BBC2 Did You See...?), he wrote 10 Rillington Place which would spark a campaign that eventually led to a posthumous pardon for Timothy Evans and the hastening of the end of capital punishment in Britain.

    A terrific book. He also wrote The Airman And The Carpenter, a really interesting look at the Lindbergh kidnapping and the conviction of Bruno Hauptmann.

    I was mesmerised by his wartime recollections. I think the BBC did a feature or series on his wartime service at sea.
