Quick question

Apologies if this has been covered before, but seeing as the search function is still down, I couldn't have a look for it. I also toyed with the idea of putting it on the motoring forum, but I know the amount of misinformation there is there with regards to matters of the law!

Anyway, I was pulled over by an unmarked car the other morning and told I was speeding. I genuinely don't believe I was and the Garda in question never showed me any readout on the gun (he didn't actually show me the gun at all). When I asked to see it, I was told that it was already being reset in the car.

It seems to be a fairly widely-held belief that if you are stopped by a member with a hand-held radar gun that they must show you the readout (as opposed to the fixed cameras, which generate a print-out), but I'd very much appreciate it if someone knew the definitive case on this.

    Many thanks in advance

No they do not have to show you the gun. Most will out of common courtesy though.

If they clock you doing 160km/hr and then try to clock you doing something faster but fail to get a direct hit on your car the speed on the screen will be reset to 0.

The speed in km/hr comes up as red lettering through the telescopic sight on the laser gun so they know the first speed they clocked you at.

If you think a judge might side with you (after you explain you were never shown the gun) dont pay the fine you will get in the post and have your day out in court.

How fast were you going, or told you were going?

In my time i have used the laser gun alot.

These things are incredibly accurate, based on laser technology and all Gardai complete a training course in the operation of the guns.

Radar which isnt used anymore wasnt as accurate at all.

    Interesting video here though

Do they use those laser type ones in the speed trap vans you see everynow and then? I've seen gards leaning out a squad car window catching people like me  no arguing with the gard though

    Thanks everyone

He said I was doing 115kmh in an 80kmh zone. I'd be perfectly happy to hold my hands up and just take the points if I genuinely thought I was doing anything near that, but I don't think I was. The vehicle in front of me was literally tearing up the road (and still accelerating) when I was pulled in, I think that's what's puzzling me most.

In fairness, should the guns not produce a print out?

I remember getting done in the UK and the copper brought me over and showed me the three readings he taken of me - banged to rights!! He also then printed off the readings and gave them to me along with the Fixed Penalty Notice.

Also, do the Guards just take one shot and that's it - if you're over, you're over? I think in the UK they ping you a few times and obviously if you're over your gone, but being over and deccelerating is not regarded as being as bad as being over and accelerating or maintaining a steady speed.

A few traffic cops I knew in the UK said if you are over and slowing you might just get away with a b011icking - whereas over and accelerating will get you a ticket every time.

No just the once from me. Of course there are situations where I would take two or more such as if you have just done an overtake or if you are coming down a hill but thats really it.
