Anyone have any idea when the engineering ball is this year?

Engineering Ball is usually late Janruary/Early February, prior to RAG Week. Often clashs with the commerce ball too. While it is usually smaller than the other Balls, such as Arts and Commerce, it's usually a very good night

Pity its the definition of the phrase "Sausage fest"

Was disappointed in it last year

The civils were on the committee, mostly it was pretty good but some things ruined it.

Like that stupid auction! They took an hour from the ball and turned it into their own fund raising event for some civils who were traveling to Africa . People may feel im being cynical about this but the money wasnt going directly to charity, it was paying for them to fly out there.

They also ran a pretty big surplus of funds, I was class rep of ECE and the first i heard about this was 12th of may (exam time, final year)

The first time I was told the confirmed amount we would be recieving back and how to get it was the 22nd of May, one week after we had finished up. Most of the class had moved home. TBH Im not sure what ever came of that money. The ball was in Late jan iirc surely they knew before this!?

Sausage fest is true, as is the case with most engineering nights out, but it was a laugh really. Pure lads lads nights - except for the stroke of genius to group the Engineering mystery tour with the Nursing mystery tour! Happy Days! I wasn't there for the auction, I only went to the afters this year, heard it dragged on a bit, and it was my mates who said that, the same guys who were heading to Africa that the auction was for in the first place! I also know the feckin drunkard who made a show of himself by barging up on stage and across the dance floor. ah well, had to be done i suppose. I preferred it to the arts ball cos everyone generally knew everyone, and I'm not even an engineering student, just lived with one and mates with the rest. arts ball was too packed, impossible to get served and all that jazz.

Just found this thread while bored! I was on the committee for the ball that year. Firstly, around €3500 of the surplus was donated to Galway Simon Community, this being most of it, the rest going to the various classes. The reason for the surplus was because we got everything way cheaper than previous years (like free corkage and chocolate fountain for example). When we sold the tickets we had no idea all this would be free, anyhow the money went to a good cause. About the auction, the first myself and two other committee members heard about it was on the night itself. Needless to say we were pissed (both meanings of the word). I agree with you on the money going on their flights, not real charity IMO. In terms of the lateness with the money, a member of the committee was dragging their heels and doing everything possible to stall the distribution of the money in order to get more money for the African trip. A major falling out followed, but the money finally went to a real charity and a certain percentage to the classes. Apologise for the lateness on receiving the money, a certain naivety on my part when dealing with the whole situation.

All in all it was a great night I believe, except the wine running out. We bought 50% more wine than both the hotel and off licence said we could possibly drink (2/3 of a bottle per person). Clearly they weren't used to dealing with engineers!

Oh about the sausage fest, pity we didn't think of having the nurses have their ball with us!
