Gardai insurance claim

I was recently (2 months ago) involved in an accident in which a Garda car rear ended me at traffic lights. I wasn't hurt and the Gardai admitted liability. They mentioned when I gave the statement something about a certificate of exemption and that they were insured by the state?

It's taken me until now to advance the claim process to a point where an assesor will look at the car and I can get the back bumper replaced. I've spent the last 2 months leaving messages at the station with no reply. When the seargent involved finally replied, they siad they had not received the messages. I was then told that my insurance company would process the request and that the Gardai insurance company would in turn compensate my insurer.

My insurnace company told me that because I'm only third party, they couldn't and that even if I was fully comp, it would would push my premium up if they processed the claim.

My insurnace company gave me the number of the Garda insurer whom I called immediately to try and sort it out myself. It now looks like I will have the car fixed quite soon as the Garda insurance crowd were very helpful and had all the details. If I'd been put in contact with the Garda insurance company from day one, I'd have it resolved by now - surely the Gardai have a procedure for this.

All in all it was a slow frustrating process that left me wondering, am I the only person that it's taken nearly two months to get compensated by the Gardai for an accidient that was their fault?

In all fairness it took your insurance company two months to tell you this and give you the insurance company that cover the Garda. Now, I couldn't tell you who they are or what their number is.

And for people contacting Gardai find out when the garda that you are dealing with is rostered to work and phone the station then or call in. There is no guarantee that the member will get the message if it is taken by another unit.

Also, hope you resolve this with some satisfaction.

Well I would think it's an important piece of information (the insurance details) for Gardai that have been involved in an accident to have on him/her. The public are expected to have this information to hand if they are involved in crash.

With the frequency of my calls (weekly), I was well aware of the Seargent in question's shift pattern and only called when they were on.

unfortunately, Garda vehicles have and exemption from displaying an insurance disc and every Garda doesn't know who is currently underwriting the fleet of vehicles, so the driver has no way of telling. simple as! sounds like your insurance is mickey mouse operation!

Does the state not provide indemnity for Garda vehicles ?

How are they mickey mouse?. They provided me with the information I needed. I was told after giving my statement at the station a week after the incident that they (the Gardai) would be in contact to tell me how to proceed with getting compensation.

It took 2 months to get hold of the Seargent and then I was told my insurance company would sort it which it turns out isn't the procedure.

Dom, as is obvious here it seems very few of us knows who insures the fleet at any time. As for the sergeant not getting back to you I can't comment on that, he may have been away, working elsewhere or just being an ass.

If you are still having trouble with the incident then write to or phone the superintendents office and explain your story and see where it goes. You will not get the problem sorted here.
