just did my first 50km cycle today. only started cycling this year and haven't put a lot of effort into it. training for triathlons.

conditions were really horrible, wind and rain and lots of big hills. Ballisodare in Sligo to Ballyshannon in Donegal. did it in 2 hrs 9 mins. just wondering what i should be trying to get that down to. i'm 35 and know i aint gonna break any land speed records but would like to push myself.

i know i should have picked a better day to do it and maybe a flatter route( it really is extremely hilly).

any experienced cyclists out there that could give me a rough time to aim for.

    thanks
    p

the cylist forum on boards here will give you all sorts of answers but 2.09 for a hilly 50km sounds pretty good for a first 50km spin.
There's plenty of splits and results posted up on da interweb with actual race times should you wish to compare against other triathletes although I think the standard distance is 40km, not your 50km..

As a guest from the cycling forum :) I can tell you that you need to focus on two simple things.

The first is your speed. A time to aim for is generally about average speed. For example I average about 28km/h on most of my long rides -- usually weather independent unless its snowing or icy but I can average higher for shorter rides -- around 2 hours.

The second thing that I use os my HR but its entirely up to you about whether you use that -- I love numbers.

For you I'd suggest just riding and trying to increase your speed. A good workout is to do a two hour ride with either 4X10 minutes faster ot 2X20 minutes faster. This works well for me.
