You most likely have them sort by name, so the way I do it is as follows

    Sort by desired sequence
    copy first picture
selct all and rename say smelltheglove
all pictures will be renamed smelltheglove (x) (x= number)
now the reason why I copy the first one is that often the first file to be renamed is damaged, I dont know why so I deleted the first photo, paste in the copied version and rename the copy individually (i.e. smelltheglove)

Rachel, maybe why the first photo is damaged is because you do not leave the file extention. Try renaming another set of photos but leave the extention in, IE rename to STG.jpg if they are jpg Then the first photo will not be damaged.
Let me know that it works for you

No tried that plenty of times, been doing it this way for years, sometimes it is damged others not, it actually comes up in a warning box also, pc not mac, so i think the copying of the first image is precautionary a lot of the time but saves hassle if the file is damaged.

I came up against this problem when building an album with Porta.

If you re-number the photos into the sequence in which they should be displayed, everything works well.

Also, this is a nice introduction to Porta skins:
