    Hey there,

I've decided to get something a bit more fun as a weekend car and lay the Merc up for the winter, and the 944 has caught my eye.

Just wondering what VRT quote I should expect for a standard, average condition 2.5 83-85 944? I've heard figures from 720 to 2500.

I am going to phone them for a quote, just want to be prepared!

    Cheers,
    Mark

You really need to get a quote from them - their system seems to be a bit like a yoyo. The 720 VRT is the minimum for any car that has no official record of emissions and has a value of up to 2000. The 2500 VRT would suggest a value of about 7000 which seems too high for a standard 944. It's going to be anywhere in between is my guess :)

I would get them to confirm the quote in writing / email too. This will give you a total cost of importing one and it's a good indication whether you'll find a cheaper one here or not.

I paid around €2000 on a 1987 944 Turbo about two years ago,
just to give you an idea....

It wasn't on their system so they had to send a request down to
    Rosslare.

They really don't know the cars or specs, and when they see the
"P" word I'd say they'll fairly pony up on the quote.....

On another note, a guy on here (Dades) brought in a 924 two or
three months ago, and I think he paid around the €800 mark, there's
not much in price between an early 944 Lux and a 924 at the moment.

By rights you should be paying around that I would imagine,
but government departments have yet to show me a firm grasp of
logic and a realistic outlook on these things......

Actually I only paid the minimum of €720 :) - But tbh I think I got lucky. I had been quoted €990 - based on a value of €2750 and they dropped it for me on the day (bring a baby and hope for a lady ;)).

944's will have a higher OMV on the 'imaginary' books, so I would anticipate playing closer to what ikillcopiers paid for his (maybe somewhere in between given the economic circumstances).

In my experience when you get a phone quote it's their average OMV for a car, i.e. they reserve the right to bump it up, or drop it down a price level on inspection. In the case of older cars though it's probably close to what you'll ultimately pay.

    Go for it!
