Filling out your Log Book

    Hi there,

    I've started doing some PPL lessons and I'm looking for a couple of quick answers to some newbie questions about filling out my Pooleys Log Book.

    My 'Holder's Operating Capacity' is 'P.u/t' as I'm a Pilot under Training. So I put the hours I've got into the 'Dual or P.2' section of the log book. However, if I did an hour's flight, do I put an hour in this section, or do I put in say 45 mins as at this early stage I didn't control the plane for the whole hour ( though technically I was under instruction for the whole hour ). Also, do I put in the Takeoffs and Landings ( one for each flight ), even if the Captain did them not me?

    In the case you describe, you should log 1 hour P.u/t.

    In general the time should be counted from when you begin to taxi for departure, to the time you finish taxi after landing (not from engine start to engine stop). Also in theory you should fill it in using GMT and not local time. But you should follow your instructor's advice; I have always used local time in my log-book. At the end of the day, all that matters is the total number of hours in each column.

    My Pooleys log book doesn't have a column for numbers of take-offs and landings (hopefully the same number for both ;)), but there is a Remarks section where you can enter this information if you wish. This has no legal significance, so you can write whatever you like. I suggest you don't bother recording numbers of landings until you are doing them yourself, and even then only for your own interest.

    As hibby says log the total time as P u/t not just when you were handling the controls. However I am wondering why you have to ask this. Surely your Instructor is signing your look book after every flight specifying what exercise you flew? If not why not? He or she should have explained all that to you.

    I never bothered with take offs and landings, recording them I mean;). It's up to you.

    I've only done 2 hours so far, and with two different schools ( as I'm trying out a few different places before I settle on one ) so that's why I'm asking the questions here, I don't really have my 'own' instructor as of yet.

    I pay for the aircraft from engine start to stop and record time in my logbook using the same measure. So even if i'm sitting on the tarmac waiting for wake turbulance to clear or know its going to be a long wait I shut down to save money but actual logbook time is from start to stop including run-up and taxi time. NZ CAA rules may be different to JAA though...
