    Hi all

I've been reading up on meditation techniques and I'm wondering if anyone here has heard of autogenic therapy? There's so much bad science and wishy-washy advice on meditation that it's hard to know if any technique is worth the effort to learn! But if people have any thoughts or good experiences on this topic, please let me know!

I dont know about autogenic therapy but I've done some Autogenic relaxation exercises before. They involve basically relaxing a little, then silently repeating statements such as "my right arm is heavy", "my left leg is heavy" etc, covering all the limbs and then moving on to "my right arm is warm" statements. Then you go through all the limbs again with the statement "my left/right arm/leg is heavy and warm". At the end of each cycle of warm, heavy, warm/heavy you make some statement such as "I am completely relaxed and calm" or whatnot. You also do ones about breathing as far as I can remember. Do a google search and you should get some scripts for it, if that's what you are looking for.

For me personally, it wasn't that hard to do and I found it beneficial for a bit of relaxation, but everybody is different and you might need to try varying methods before you find the one that is right for you. Progressive Muscular relaxation is another one you might look at, and there's normally CDs you can buy/download with guided relaxations. Same with meditation, you can usually get audio tracks that will guide you through it, so you can eventually develop your own style.
