Just wondering what the average HR is for people in a marathon. I know it'll vary from individual to individual but is it a good indicator of how hard you are pushing ?

For my last 3 marathons it's been 157, 152 & 163 which seems low enough and makes me think I've not really pushed hard enough and that when the going got tough I just raised the white flag and meandered to the finish.

Just posting the average hr is pretty useless if you don't post your max. hr with it.

My typical marathon hr is between 165 and 168, from a max hr of 190 (about 86 - 88 % of max).

Ok, if your max is 195, then yes, 152, 157 and 163 seems a little low to me. Having said that, the cardiovascular system is not the only limiting system in a marathon. If you start cramping or run out of fuel and have to walk for any significant time, then your average HR is going to be a lot lower, no matter how much you pushed during the earlier part of the race.
