Try run it as Administrator, got to C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger and right click on the exe, run as administrator

    See if that helps

    Try uninstalling it. reboot. re-install.
Looksa like a dll file has become faulty.

    Sorry Biggins No change ,

Still doesn't want to log in after re install

normally fix issues like this in my sleep , but I seen no reason for this not to work .I have removed it completely and nearly any trace it was every on my system before as well , and it still didnt work.

odd think is very basic MSN , still logs in fine but Live won't

When you uninstalled it, did you conform that the ntdll.dll file WAS removed also?
Could have been left behind in the windows directories such as the system32 dir!
Also see that the wlcomm.exe has been removed too by visual check.
