New exhaust required

    My mitsubishi colt has recently developed a noisy exhaust and needs replacing. After a bit of investigation I found the problem.

    Rust has eaten through the mid section of the exhaust pipe at the point where the mid section joins the back exhaust box.

    I have two questions. 1) Where can I get a replacement mid-section for a Mitsubishi Colt as I want to fix this myself for as cheap as possible (recession etc).

    2) As I am fixing this myself does anyone out there have any hints or tips for doing this? It looks like a matter of nuts and bolts at either end and a supporting bolt midway but I have learnt that there is always tricks of the trade that manuals wont tell you.

    I would love to give welding a go as a cheap option. However, the exhaust pipe has totally detached itself from the collar that bolts to the back section at the point where that section of pipe ends and I think that any weld around that area would be very weak. I could be wrong!

    Is there much metal between the back box and where its rusted off?

    If so you can just fabricate a piece of steel, round it off or just find a new exhaust, cut out a piece and weld it on.

    I see what you are getting at ... not sure that I would be capable of doing a good job in that respect, but will keep it in mind.

    Hi 2rs,

    I got a replacement mid section fitted to my Vectra a few months back. Like your own situation rust caused the whole section from the front of the mid section to the end of tailpipe to fall off the car. I don't have the receipt to hand but as far as I recall it was 90 quid for a new mid section fitted and it was a shiny new original GM part. My backbox was able to be saved. That was in Emerald exhausts in Limerick city outskirts. I did need to leave the complete section with him overnight beforehand as he needed to soak the bolts in WD40 as the rust was so bad in them. You would no doubt pick up an exhaust in a breakers yard but you would be taking a chance on it maybe, especially if the car had being laid up for some considerable time.

    I am pretty 100% sure that gaskets would need to go into each section where there is a join but stand to be corrected. Somebody else might clarify and correct me if this is not the case? Also I think it may be the case that a paste type substance is put in where there are joins to form an airtight seal. Agin if this is not the case I stand to be corrected. I don't think it would be a very easy job without a pit or a ramp and the guys in the industry would also generally use props to support exhaust when attaching as far as I'm aware.
