    from Halfords.
Mostly 195/50R15 or 17" sets which start at €310 for Tyres & Alloys (set of 4)
    which seems a good bargain.

Depends on the tyres to be honest, I'd say that's the kind of money you'd want to spend on tyres alone! Sure looks like a good deal though, if the tyres are ok, but if they're a cheap chinese brand, think twice.

It is after all the only thing between you and the road.. you need to be able to trust it.

Definitely, two things you should never skimp on are tyres and brakes. (I don't mean to take from your find op, am just worried about all these cheap tyres on the market.)

There is no real need to spend a fortune on tyres if you are not into "energetic" driving.... I have tried numerous tyres and it realy does depend on your driving style and mindset.
If you are into firing your car into a bend and then sort it out afterwards, then yes, you NEED traction, if you are toddling about town, traffic lights to traffic lights..... you don't need top of the range stuff.
The majority if suppliers use Federal 757 tyres, they are cheap but offer pretty good grip, not the quietest on the road. Yokahama A539 Excellent tyre but the price matches. The decision..... is yours.....
