Does 18ct not refer to the gold rather than the diamonds?

I'd say in this instance the 18ct refers to the gold. I doubt fields would even stock an 18 carat diamond.

    Hello there.

White gold is made up of:

    Gold 75%
    Palladium 10%
    Nickel 10%
    Zinc 5%

    From: http://chemistry.about.com/od/jewelrychemistry/a/goldalloys.htm

Palladium is a platinum-family metal and therefore nonreactive, nickel and
zinc on the other hand can cause an allergic reaction in the skin. It should
wear similarly to 18 kt yellow gold -- but might need to be re-plated every
so often if the rhodium plating wears off. If you are after white metal which
doesn't require this, platinum is a good idea, although much more expensive.
