Thirst

Just back from seeing this at the IFI. Yikes.

It reminded me a little of Let The Right One In, with its mix of vampires, comedy and romance. It sags a little in the middle, while the main character tried to find some kind of normality in his situation, but when they started painting the walls white, as can be seen in the trailer, I could tell there was trouble ahead. (In Eastern cultures such as Korea, white is what they wear for mourning. At the risk of over-analysing things - this and other bits of the film could be viewed as criticism of Catholicism and other Western influences in Korea.)

It's beautifully shot and directed, and has already won a major award (Jury Prize at Cannes). But be warned, it pulls no punches. If you're a Catholic priest, or just heavily in to your religion, you are not supposed to like this film. I mean - priests, blood, vampires ... lust.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

It's a film I'm really, really looking forward to. Chan-wook Park is a director who I'd say most people know because of Oldboy, and I find a lot didn't quite like his other work, such as Lady Vengeance and I'm A Cyborg, But That's OK. My first introduction to Park's films was through Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, only seeing Oldboy some time later, and I though he was just an extremely talented director from then on. He's got a handle on some very different styles, which is clear with JSA for example. I think Thirst should be an exceptional film also.

I'm also quite a fan of Kang-ho Song, from The Host to Memories of Murder, he's probably one of my favourite actors world-wide.

I really enjoyed all of the "vengeance trilogy" along with I'm a Cyborg and have been really looking forward to this one for ages.

Unfortunately, despite having it all over their website, and in their magazines etc...Cineworld in glasgow dont seem to be showing it.
In fact the only place screening it are the GFT, but at times when i cant get to see it.

    Not happy.

This is another film that I am really looking forward to, and like Karl, I am a big fan of Kang-ho Song, so seeing what he brings to the role/film is my main reason.

I want to see this but I'm really falling behind with films I want to see. I only saw Zombieland on Friday, while I've yet to see Thirst and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Add Cirque Du Freak to the mix which is out on Friday I can't see myself getting to see Thirst anytime some which is a shame because it looks downright disturbing.

It's typical really, there were three weeks that nothing but garbage was being released, now all these films are coming out within the same timeframe.

Yup looking forward to getting to see this, although seems to be on at a better time next week (half six is handier than half eight for me!). I really enjoyed I'm a Cyborg... and the Vengeance Trilogy (Lady Vengeance was a little weak) so have been keeping an eye on this one for a while.

Watched this today and loved it. Would possibly even put it above Let the Right One In as a refreshing take on the vampire genre. Have an extended review here, but overall thought it was dark, funny, sweet, demented and intelligent - always five good adjectives to have together :) Although would agree with the OP about the slight dip in the middle following
    the drowning
, but makes up for it with a fantastic conclusion.

Sorry for the bump but i just got to see this now.

Park sure as hell didnt let me down!

He's rapidly becoming one of my favourite all time directors and this was an absolute joy to watch.
I love the way he can make you feel so many emotions at one time, and his skill in making something absolutely brutal or seriously depressing that little easier to swallow by adding in some demented comedy is brilliant.

I thought Tae Ju was absolutely terrifying in the final third, definetly one of the best takes on the vampire genre ive seen in a long long time

Picked it up on Bluray a few weeks back, thoroughly magnificent film. Kang-ho Song was just brilliant. Has to be said, definitely one of the best vampire films in, well, decades probably.

Saw this in the IFI. Thought it was an interesting take on vampire films, and I'm glad the priest doesn't conform to the stereotype and doesn't lose his faith, but I didn't think the film was that good. I didn't think it was that well versed and, although interesting in parts, thought their actions were a bit odd. And it was far too long.

Anyway, I wish I enjoyed this film as much as others in this thread, but I didn't think much of it. (I thoroughly enjoyed Låt den rätte komma in though, fantastic film)

Was very disappointed with this one... expected too much maybe... but enjoyed the end.... actually while typing this making me think about it, it wasn't that bad really... hmm.

Just watched this and thought it was excellent. There is a lot of humour in the movie which I wasnt expecting at all.

Very weird in places and a great take on the vampire myth.

    Highly recommended.

Just had to bump this, because I finally got around to seeing it.

Thought it was fantastic, and brings a much-needed freshness to the vampire genre (as Let The Right One In did before it). Beautifully shot, some nice dark humour (
like Tae-ju picking up the arm-chair with her mother sitting in it in front of everyone, and realising what she had done
) and great performances from the two leads.

In particular I thought the final third of the film was the strongest.
Everything after Tae-ju is turned into a vampire is fantastic. The final scene is just excellent.

I must go looking for I'm A Cyborg, haven't been able to pick it up locally.
