    Hi Folks,

Long time reader, new member! OH is regular poster (hope he doesnt post on this tread, or might be good if he did!)

I know ye probably get this a lot by was thinking of getting my OH a laptop for xmas (his current one is nearly dead, he has been mainly using mine for the past 6 Months). I have about a grand but can go to €1,500 if needs be. He is a really into computers and technology but I am absolutely clueless when it comes to computers! What should i look out for? He mentioned getting a mac a couple of months ago but i have never even used one so i am very lost! He has used macs before but will the external harddrive and other stuff he has for his present laptop still work with a macbook? Also where would be the best place to get one? All he really wants is something with a lot of storage and fairly up to date technology. oh and something that runs fairly quickly and I know the last laptop he had was good for Multimedia performance (well according to the box!)

If anyone can offer me any advice it would be very much appreciated! I'm terrified of going to PC shop as i'm not really sure what they are talking about half the time! And i dont want to get told that i need something that I don't by some salesman who wants to up his commission. This year has been a tough year for him and i really would like to get him a nice laptop for Christmas. I was thinking of telling him what i was getting and let him pick it out himself but i know he would talk me out of it because he would think its too much money to spend on him and i want to have it as a surprise for him on Christmas morning.

I know i havent given ye a lot of information on what i need but im hoping ye wonderful people will be able to help me :)

    Thanking you in advance :)

I'm planning on getting myself a new laptop soon, it's just a pity I don't have a girlfriend willing to spend a grand on one for me. :)

We'll need to know what he's going to be using it for (e.g. games, picture editing etc). Would he be looking for sheer horsepower or would he be more concerned with portability. Any thing you can tell us about how he would use the laptop will make it easier for us to get the right one.
