Hey Im thinking of entering the Alpe d'Huez triathlon (Long course). Has anybody here done it before? What did you think? Is it well organised?

I'm also thinking about the training for it... does anybody know the earliest in the year I could head to the alps to get some practice in climbing those climbs (So there not blocked by snow). And getting some high altitude running done too.

After DCM next weekend I've NO races entered so I need to enter something soon or else I could end up loosing focus in my training

The access road to Alpe D'huez is rarely closed unless there is a very strong snow storm, in any case partially closed at night.
So, cycling from Bourg d'oisans up to Huez is always ok (seriously challenging though!) , but i would not like doing it in Jan or Feb though.. April onwards should be good.

how did you travel to the Alpe de'huez triathlon. Did you rent a bike or bring your own bike ?

I did the long course this year. Its very very tough. My weakest is always the bike, so those hills were torture. I did an ironman this year too and found it easier.... ok, bad choice of words..... less torturous!

Its a fantastic event. The setting is simply stunning. Swim is lovely and the run is definitely not boring! The cycle though, is seriously hard. If you like big hills....Definitely recommend!

Someone told me I came second from last, but I prefer your version....thanks!

Its pretty basic, but perfect location. Flew into Geneva with Aer Lingus and rented a car from the airport. Its about a 3 hour drive. Flew over on the Monday, raced Wednesday and back home early Thursday.

Its a great event and great value for what you get - a unique experience and sore quads for weeks!

Did u bring the bike with you . How much did it cost to transport the bike on the plane

I did bring my own bike. Think it's about 60 euro each way, but can't remember. I know you can rent top of the range carbon bikes for less expense and if I was doing it again I'd rent. My own bike didn't travel well and had to spend 30 euro getting it sorted. It also means you need a big rental car - there were 4 of us so we pretty much needed a bus! If you're not used to travelling with a bike as I'm not, then it can be a lot of hassle.
