I have a serious problem, my girlfriend is the threatening to de-rail my budding cycling career due to a smelly crash helmet. It's either i go or the helmet goes. (maybe she goes). The helmet is only 6-7 months old.
Any ideas on how to get rid of the smell.

Take out all the padding and put them in the washing machine.

Take the lid (without padding) and give it a good wash under the shower head, leave to dry on the washing line.

    Reassemble when everything is dry.

If the padding is available to purchase seperately (Some high end lids have this facility) get a couple of sets and wash/replace after every spin.

Ah she'd kick up an awful fuss if she was locked in there.

Straps are the big ones for holding in the smell.

You can store the helmet in a plastic bag once it drys which should contain the smell.

    Also
It's either i go or the helmet goes.
So you'd go an leave you helmet behind so she can keep your "smell" :P

Some tips here, including wearing the helmet when you shower, and putting the helmet in the dishwasher.

My solution was to stop wearing one, but I don't want to start that thread again.

I see that one link says never put your helmet in the dishwasher. Forget I said that.

I find wearing a headbad or bandana under the helmet helps a lot as it's easier to wash these than the helmet itself. It also stops the sweat from rolling down your face

alcohol hand gel which is all the rage at the moment with the swine flu is real good at neutralizing bad smells as it destroys the bacteria which make the smell, you can get it in any pharmacy, just put a little on and rub it in

The only time I have ever had this problem is when the helmet was too small for me... I had to use my gf's once, it did the trick but was a little small and got soaked in sweat, perhaps yours is too tight hence absorbing all the sweat without allowing it to dry at the same time. If your washing the internal padding put them in a sock as the washing machine may rip it up... hand washing works too.

    Best of luck......
