    Hi guys,

I've just been reading about this scheme and can't seem to find much information about it.

Does anybody know if the schemes are voluntary or paid and where I can find out which schools in Dublin might need a German language assistant?

Thanks for any help you can give!

(First post on Boards! Woohoo :)!)

    hey

Do you mean the Comenius Language Assistantship Scheme? If so, then it is not exactly a voluntary scheme but you're not paid too much either . Just enough to support yourself in a given country (you cant be an assistant in your own country) and maybe have a bit of fun at weekends. Note that you don't have too much of a choice where you'll be sent. While filling in an application form you list 6 countries you'd like to be considered for in your order of preference. When I did it, I was sent to the last place on my list.

In Ireland this scheme is supervised by Leargas (http://www.leargas.ie/programme_main.php?prog_code=7069) but if you're not an Irish national you need to apply in your own country.

take a look at this FAQ for more info: http://comenius.org.pl/s/p/artykuly/36/36/FAQ_09-english.pdf

If you have any more practical questions, just ask :)

Or do you mean the Language Assistant Scheme run by the Department of Education? http://www.education.ie/home/home.jsp?pcategory=10900&ecategory=32241&language=EN

This scheme is run by the Departments of Education in the different countries running it. I spent a year working as an English Langauge Assistant in Germany, but my initial application was sent to the Irish Dept of Education, so I'd say if you wanted to come to Ireland as a German Langauge Assistant, you'd probably have to apply first of all to the German or Austrian Dept of Education, and they'd sort it out from there with the Irish Dept. In Germany it's the Pädagogischer Austauschdienst who runs it anyway, here's the link

not too sure about Austria. It's a really good year, I'd definitely say go for it, although as what Madzidua said about the Comenius scheme, this one isn't exactly well paid either. (although the pay depends on the recieving country, so not too sure how much Ireland pay).

PS....should have mentioned this in the last post as you said you wanted a school in Dublin, with the FSA programme you don't really get to choose where to go, you can give preferences, but you can be sent anywhere. I was lucky in that I was given my first choice in Germany, but I know lots of others who were sent to really remote places in the middle of nowhere. So here's hoping you get somwhere good!
