Audi A4 problem

I was driving home last night after a 170klm journey when the car started giving trouble. It would not increase speed, for very short peroids of time at first but then became more regular and it started loosing power causing me to lower gear, there was also quite a bit of emmissions from the exhaust when the car was loosing power.

When the car was idling i tried revving the engine and it seemed fine with the exception of some crap from the exhaust but when i tried driving it the same problem again.I drove it a bit this morning and it conked out on the side of the road , it would restart but only for a few seconds and then cut out again

Anybody got any idea about this problem??

    Its a b7 2005 2.0 tdi model

I'd have a guess that the MAF (Mass Air Flow)sensor is gone. Its not a big job but the part is around €200 iirc.

Either that or possibly a damaged or dislodged intercooler pipe. These aren't too expensive. Maybe €50 each. Again not a big job to replace.

I doubt it's your intercooler pipe, if this pops off all power will drop off instantly, not over a period of time. MAF is similar, to check if the maf is at fault, disconnect it and go for a drive. If power is restored it's your maf, if not you need to look else where. Don't forget to reconnect the maf ;)

It could be a turbo problem, what mileage is on the car? Do you allow the car to fully warm up before driving hard and let it idle for a few mins after a hard drive? Not doing this will reduce the life of the turbo.

Oh please dont say turbo, where's eddy gonna get the money to fix that?there is 110000mls on it btw and its one of those audi engins that burns oil...
I live about 8 mins from the motorway so if thats time enough for everything to heat up then im ok,thats 8 mins in a 50 zone which i more or less stick to.I did notice when i started my journey last night that it seemed lazy but just a tiny bit, drove for 50 mins on the motorway to the airport and it was fine,it was fine almost all the way back too.
Thanks for the advice about the turbo and heating up but why would i have to let it cool down by letting the engine idle?

My gf had a similar problem with her a3, one difference was that sometimes the revving increased. It turned out to be a dirty throttle body.

Had a similar problem with my TDi golf, was a loose vacuum pipe. Solved easy, happened again couple of months later, had to clean out veins on the turbo to get power back.

If the intercooler pipe was damaged and not off would the symptoms not be as the OP described?

The turbo is fed with oil from the engine, if the engine is turned off with the turbo very hot it will bake the oil in turbo which can reduce it's life. If you let the car idle for a few mins the turbo will cool down as it's not spinning and won't bake the oil :)

If I were a betting man, I would bet this is written somewhere in the owners manual

I am replacing the turbo on the my A4 this week, exact same car as yours. If it is the turbo get it off Assured Performance in Walkinstown, they are the distributor for Garrett and distribute to Audi Ireland. Mine is costing 620 + VAT, the same turbo from Newmarket Motors was 1195 + VAT and Tom Hogans quoted 2700 to do all the work including a full service.

    Hijack Section:
The reason the turbo failed was the oil became too dirty and broke down, from what the mech told me it was probably a lower grade of oil than the 5W30 supposed to be used. It only lasted 14000 miles instead of the 20000 that the Audi garage than put it in (d***heads) said it should last. Morale to the story, do your own oil changes and use the stuff thats 50 quid a gallon and do it every 10k miles even if it should last 20k.

Thanks for the advice about assured performance, audi were looking for 1200 for the part but i bought it myself for about 700.

    Thanks friend.
