What if...

    A hypothetical...

What if companies like Image-Line, Propellerhead, Steinberg, and other DAW creators had taken a hard line stance on pirating? Invested more money into making sure their programs were a lot harder to crack? What would things be like today?

I'm guessing the number of producers would be cut in half, if not 70-80%. How many producers (whether they buy legit now or not) got their start on a pirated version of FL?

    Food for thought...

meh not really.software is so cheap nowadays almost anyone can afford it.and if they cant afford it theres free daws out there thatll do a great job of it.
plus free synths, effects etc,you could make a complete track with just freeware alone nowadays

If you can't afford any of the paid programs then get something like Reaper.

For me, I prefer to buy software rather than illegally download it. I bought FL Studio last year online and it comes with lifetime upgrades. I'm now up to FL 9 and they're improving it constantly. I also get betas of various VST's and discounts on them.

By purchasing the software you're helping them develop and provide support for the application.

Steinberg did invest heavily in anti-piracy measures, so much so, some would argue that these occupied nearly as much disk space as the sequencer itself. When Cubase SX3 came out the claim was that it was uncrackable ... Supposedly, it took an obscene amount of time to crack, but the hackers were up to the job of doing it (on principle, it would seem)

How many of those 'producers' are any good ?

Cream goes to the top - robbing other people's software/hard work/imagination doesn't have any part to play in that ...

Er I doubt that to be honest, one of the first things I did when I decided to get into the music production scene was to buy a full version of pro-tools - its like any profession, you buy the required tools to get yourself started.
Would you hire a a plumber who's tools were borrowed or stolen??
Fair enough, a few may start on cracked software, but anyone who know what the are at, knows the importance of legit gear.
