Flying using IFR

    Hi all

After a couple of years just airport watching and flying VFR in FSX I'm now keen to learn more about flying using instruments to get me from "A" to "B". I'd like to get to understand how to use ILS and the various other components and how to employ autopilot.

Is there a concise, ckear step-by-step guide anyone can point me to in order to get to grips with this? Also, how does one find out the various ILS frequencies required for flying to a destination; and can instruments be used to give a fully automatic landing?

    Thanks a lot,
    Del

Taking your last question first, to get frequencies and all the info about a particular approach or airport, you need to reference the charts for the airport. The real world ones can be found online for free in most cases. Basically google the "AIP" for the country. Ireland is http://www.iaa.ie/safe_reg/iaip/aip_directory.htm and down at the bottom for each particular airport. Then select whatever approach etc and frequencies etc are there.

Any default aircraft with FSX generally won't do an autoland for you- You'd need to have the PMDG or a payware aircraft, generally what happens is you tune the ILS in both nav boxes and at about 1500 AGL all 2/3 autopilots will couple automatically and the green autoland light lights up.

Regarding how to use the ILS etc the best advice I can give is lookup youtube- there are countless tutorials there.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the help Neon. Will explore this further. I think I've got the principles sorted out in my head OK, it's just putting them into practice, and that's just a lot of practising, I guess!
