Which of the following cars has the greater top speed and which one of the two cars accelerates from 0 to 100km the quickest?

First car is a VW Passat (2006 model, B6 Comfortline) It has a 1.6 FSI petrol engine (85kw - 115 hp)

    Second car is a Audi A4 SE (2000 model) It has a 1.9 TDI Diesel engine (85kw - 115hp)

Two lads I know from work own these cars and were arguing over which was quicker.

Is there a difference or are they about the same?

The diesel will feel alot quicker but in the end, there wouldnt be a whole lot in it. The petrol will rev alot higher and possibly make 60 mph in 2nd gear.

Parkers.co.uk gives the Passat 1.6FSI 11.0 seconds to 60mph but the A4 1.9tdi 115bhp will do it in 10.2 seconds.

Top speed is the same at 124mph

    If the A4 is the 00 - 04 model. 0-60 mph is 10.8 seconds
    If the A4 is the 95 - 01 model. 0-60 mph is 10.2 seconds
The passat will do it in 11 seconds.

It would be a fairly close race :)

    * The above figures assume they are both manual saloons.

The A4 diesel is slightly faster to accelerate to 60mph than the Passat you reckon?

What about weight and power ratio? Which is the heavier car? I reckon the Passat is but the Audi's are also known to be heavy, and the diesel engine is surely heavier in weight than the 1.6 FSI engine?

By the way the A4 is the 1994-2001 model. Is that A4 a lighter car than the 00 -04 model? Both cars mentioned above have manual transmission.

Well my 06 2.0 TDI DSG Passat gets to 100 km/h fairly lively now! :d Never timed it, but youtube videos suggest it'll do it in about 10 seconds alright!

Torque in the diesel will make it feel faster, but i doubt there would be too much in it.
The rev range in the petrol would help over all but the off the line in the diesel would be good.
In the end slap both of them, say grow up or start measuring knob sizes because its a silly argument either way.

I can see your point of view but as the lads were on about it, I was interested in finding out myself as to which one was the better. This is why I came on boards and posted my query, Afterall it is a motor discussion forum, and I wanted to hear different people's opinions on it.

Its a bit like comparing the Golf Gti with the Audi TT or Skoda Octavia VRS, all similiar cars but people will have different views on each.

The diesel would be quicker in real life. 30-70 mph would be hugely quicker.
