I've been told by a mechanic who has had my 2005 BMW 116i for the past two weeks no less, that i need a new timing chain. Has anyone got any idea how much this will cost. He reckons €1,000 at the very least. Does this sound right?

Not a hope would it cost €1000 - think you need a new mechanic!

a chain should be good for about 150k miles (or 250k km's since its a 2005). Maybe you should get a second opinion from someone you can trust

I'm not saying its not possible... but the older M43 engine has had timing chains for the last 16 years, plenty of them still driving around from that year and i've never heard of one chain giving problems. I know this is a much newer car/engine, but still...

There was a service recall for some of the E90 316i timing chain tensioners so maybe give your BMW dealers a buzz and see if this applies to your 1 series ;)

A stroke of luck.. after all the fiasco re timing chain, i decided to ring Murphy&Gunn to ask them about the timing chain. The guy asked my reg number which i gave him. He came back and told me that there was a recall on my car re guess what, the timing chain. He said drop it down and we'll fix it for free. So i got it towed there from the useless mechanic. Had it back three days later, it was perfect. They also cleaned the car!! Happy ending...

My mother-inlaw has one of these and the chain has slipped 3 times on it.

I had to strip it and set back up the timming each time(normally tesco's carpark or somewhere similar)

I was on to a few guys on a UK forum about it as when it happened first no one really seemed to have heard of the issue, they told me UK BMW recalled them so I contacted an Irish BMW (Wexford) dealer to describe the problem, First they asked what garage I work for, I told them for myself, They then said they couldnt help me Then I told them I had heard of a tensioner recall and they told me they have never heard of such an upgraded tensioner or recall. So I asked them to check the reg of the car to see if any recalls showed up and they refused and just told me if I wanted to buy a tensioner I could for ... wait for it.... 289 yoyo's.... Wan*ers.

Its just happened again today so I'll be given Murphy & Gunn a call to see if they can organise a free tensioner for me.

    Update.

Rang up, checked reg and got booked in for Wed just gone.

    Job done

See what happens when you contact a decent BMW garage.

Saved €289 as this is what BMW Wexford wanted me to pay for a tensioner.. Crooks

    Thanks M&G

    :D

Its a bit silly on behalf of the BMW garage in wexford, cause if they had done the recall they would of been paid by BMW for the job.

What engine is in the 116i? is it hard to change the tensioner?

Nice to hear two thumbs up for a dealer for a change. M&G seem to have a good reputation?

    Hi All,

not that well up on cars.

    I have a 05 BMW 1 series 116

Car cut out there the other day wouldnt start again, brought it to the garage and they said the fuel pump was gone....so ordered a new one and fitted it.
The engine starts now but they said the Timing chain has slipped. Cost me 460 euro today for the fuel pump

Anyway to cut a long story short, i rang BMW because they told my garage there was a fault with the timing chain tensioner.
When he told me i googled it and found these threads and that there was a recall.

I bought the car 2 years ago from a garage so my car was not recalled probably because they couldnt locate it.

Anyway I rang BMW and they are taking it in next Wednesday to replace the tensioner and reset or change the timing chain.

forgive me im not well up on cars.

Only thing is did the issue ruin the fuel pump...as ive just paid 460 :(
