At the top of Grafton St on the corner of St Stephens Green is a fine arch dedicated to the memory of members of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers who were killed in the 2nd Boer War . Called ‘Fusiliers Arch’ it is also called ‘Traitors Gate’ . Many Irish Regiments in the British army fought in the Boer War and hundreds of Irish volunteers , including John McBride who lead one of the Commandos after its leader was injured ,fought with distinction on the side of the Boer farmers ,many died and some were made POWs . So my question is , with republican governments after the civil war why is there no monument or memorial to the Irish men who fought in the two Irish Brigades?

Maybe because they weren't big on foreign wars. Most post-independence meorials tend to be toned down in scale, with the Garden of Remembrance being the most populat and hte War Memorial Park virtually unheard of.

I saw somewhere recently that some Irish and Scottish, along with other nationalities, were actually fighting on the side of the Boers. That must have been slightly complicated.

I know this is slightly off topic, but i thought it worth sharing.

I went to a wedding at the Garrison Church (Holy Trinity) in Windsor a few years back and as is common at Weddings, I was bored stiff, so I had a good look at the memorials on the wall. It struck me that there were an enormous number of men listed as having dies from the Fever I think it was called. I believe that something like like 15,000 British Soldiers lost their lives in the Cholera epidemic, in addition to the 20,000 civilians that also died.

My Great Grandfather was in the latter part of the Boer war. He was in the Inniskilling Fusiliers. There may be a memorial in their regimental museum up in Enniskliien.

The inscription on this monument to Major John MacBride on the South Mall, Westport, mentions his service with the Irish Transvaal Brigade.
